After that strange exchange with Cook outside, Tess made her way back inside the crowded club, her mind still spinning from the bizarre moment she had just experienced. She found Katie lounging against a wall, looking blissfully out of it after hours of partying.
Tess leaned her head back against the wall, the night's events weighing on her. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of shuffling on the stage, and she turned to see Cook climbing up there, a mic in his hand. The room seemed to collectively freeze, everyone turning their attention to him in confusion.
"What's he doing now?" Effy's voice came from behind them
Katie, squinting at the stage, let out a confused laugh. "Is he gonna sing?"
Freddie, sitting nearby, shook his head in disbelief. "Yeah," he muttered, sounding less than enthused. "He's really doing it."
Tess could hardly believe it herself. Cook on stage? Singing? It was the last thing she'd expected. Cook raised the mic to his lips, grinning as if he owned the place.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Cook announced, his voice carrying through the room. "I'd like to dedicate this to a very special lady."
"Oh, shit," Freddie muttered. "This is gonna be bad."
"Please someone record this" Tess laughed
As soon as Cook began to sing, Tess's stomach knotted. She recognised the song, and while Cook's voice wasn't half bad, it was the way he kept glancing in her direction that made her feel uneasy. His eyes would flit over to her, locking for just a moment before shifting back to the audience. Tess couldn't tell if he was trying to make her jealous, get her attention, or if it was just the drugs clouding her judgement.
"Go on, my son!" someone in the crowd yelled, cheering Cook on.
Cook continued, his voice smooth but slightly slurred from the alcohol and substances coursing through his veins. "I write the songs that make the whole world sing," he belted out, his gaze sweeping over the room but always returning to Tess.
Tess noticed the angry look on Johnny White's face from across the club. He was staring at Cook like a predator sizing up its prey, and Tess felt her stomach drop.
Tess leaned over to Katie, her voice low. "This isn't gonna end well."
Katie, barely listening, just hummed in agreement.
Then, it happened in a blur. Just as Cook hit one of the final lines of the song, there was a loud crack. A bottle smashed over the back of Cook's head, sending him stumbling forward on the stage. Gasps echoed through the crowd, but no one fully processed what had just happened. One second, Cook was singing, and the next, he was being dragged off the stage by two of Johnny White's men into a back room.
Tess's breath caught in her throat as the room fell into a stunned silence. She glanced at Katie, who was too spaced out to react. Effy and Freddie stood there, frozen, unsure of what to do next.
"For fucks sake!" Freddie stormed off in the direction of Cook.
"What the fuck just happened" Katie seemed confused
"Cook was being an idiot- again" Effy stated
"Well it's definitely been more entertaining than before" Tess mentioned
"Uhm Eff I don't feel too good" Panda slurred, she looked like she was gonna faint but before anyone could react there was a loud crash behind them.
And just like that Cook had fallen from above the stage onto the cake. The overly decorated dessert went flying. It got all over Kayleigh's dress making Katie and Tess laugh but it also landed all over her fiance's family. In a blur of events a fight had broken out- more like a food fight and the group found themselves dodging flying cake and angry old men.
