The forest around them grew darker as they rode away from the Temple of Ashen. The setting sun bathed the sky in hues of deep purple and orange, casting long shadows over the landscape. The artifact, tucked safely into Kael's cloak, pulsed faintly, a soft reminder of the power they had just unleashed.Ariana rode in silence, her mind racing. The first trial had been dangerous enough, but they had two more to go—and something told her the worst was yet to come. The weight of the ancient book still hung heavy in her satchel, and the pulsing of her necklace was a constant reminder that she was tied to this magic in ways she didn't yet understand.
Beside her, Kael seemed more relaxed, but Ariana knew better than to trust appearances. The prince had a way of hiding what was really going on in that mind of his, keeping his thoughts carefully guarded behind that infuriating smile.
"So," Kael said, breaking the silence as they passed through a narrow glen. "That wasn't so bad, was it?"
Ariana shot him a glare. "We were almost crushed by a collapsing temple. I wouldn't exactly call that 'not bad.'"
Kael chuckled, the sound soft in the cool evening air. "You have to admit, though. We make a good team."
Ariana huffed, her eyes forward. "I don't do teams."
"Really?" Kael said, his tone teasing. "Because from where I'm sitting, we've been working pretty well together."
Ariana didn't respond, though a small part of her knew he was right. Despite her instincts to work alone, she had to admit that Kael had held his own back in the temple. More than that, he had saved her—twice, if she was being honest.
"Fine," she muttered after a long pause. "You're not completely useless."
Kael's grin was immediate. "High praise coming from you."
"Don't let it go to your head," she shot back, though her tone was lighter now.
Kael chuckled again, but his expression grew more serious as they rode further from the temple. "The next artifact will be harder. We'll need to head to the Mire of Dusk. It's... not a place most people survive."
Ariana raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. "The Mire of Dusk? Sounds charming."
Kael's gaze flickered with something dark. "It's anything but. It's a swamp—cursed, some say. The magic there warps everything it touches. The land, the creatures, even the people who dare enter it."
Ariana frowned, her hand moving to the necklace beneath her cloak. "And we need to go there?"
Kael nodded, his voice grim. "The second artifact is hidden in the heart of the mire. It's been lost for centuries. Few have tried to find it. Even fewer have made it back."
Ariana's jaw tightened, her mind racing. She had faced dangers before—traps, curses, even magic. But this felt different. Darker. And the thought of entering a cursed swamp, where the very land itself was tainted, sent a chill down her spine.
"You don't have to come," Kael said suddenly, his voice quieter now. "If you don't want to."
Ariana shot him a look, her eyes narrowing. "Don't insult me, Your Highness."
Kael raised an eyebrow, his lips curving into a faint smile. "I wasn't. Just thought you might want a way out."
Ariana huffed, her hand tightening on the reins. "There's no way out. Not for me. Not until this is over."
Kael's smile softened, but there was something serious in his eyes. "I know the feeling."
They rode in silence for a few more minutes, the tension between them shifting from playful to something deeper, something more personal. Ariana had always kept her distance from people—trust was a weakness in her world. But Kael was different. He had seen the worst of the kingdom, the worst of his own family, and yet here he was, fighting against it.
