The air inside the shrine crackled with dark energy as the guardian loomed before them, its form shifting like smoke, glowing red eyes locked on Ariana and Kael. The oppressive magic pressed down on them, making it hard to breathe, but Ariana kept her dagger steady, her heart pounding in her chest.

Kael stood beside her, sword drawn, his green eyes sharp and focused. "We need to get that artifact and get out. Fast."

Ariana nodded, her muscles coiled, ready to strike. "Got it. Any brilliant ideas on how to do that without being torn apart by the shadow over here?"

The guardian's low, guttural laughter echoed through the shrine, its voice dripping with malice. "Foolish mortals. You think you can take what belongs to the magic realm?"

Ariana's fingers tightened around the hilt of her dagger. "We're about to find out."

Before the guardian could respond, Ariana lunged forward, her dagger slicing through the air. The blade passed right through the shadowy figure as if it were made of smoke, and Ariana stumbled, her feet skidding on the slick floor.

"Nice try," Kael called, his voice tense.

Ariana shot him a glare. "I'd like to see you do better."

The guardian's eyes gleamed as it raised a hand, the shadows around it swirling violently. With a flick of its wrist, a bolt of dark magic shot toward Ariana, faster than she could react.

But Kael was already moving. He stepped in front of her, his sword raised, and deflected the bolt with a swift, practiced motion. The impact sent him stumbling back, his feet skidding on the stone floor, but he stayed on his feet, his eyes blazing.

Ariana's heart leaped into her throat. "You okay?"

Kael nodded, though his voice was strained. "I've had worse."

The guardian's form shifted, growing larger, more menacing. The shadows around it twisted and writhed, and Ariana could feel the weight of its magic pressing down on her, suffocating.

"We need to hit it with something stronger than a dagger," Kael muttered, his grip tightening on his sword. "The shadows are feeding it. We need to disrupt the magic."

Ariana's mind raced. Disrupt the magic. How? Her eyes flicked to the artifact on the pedestal, the glowing crystal pulsing with dark energy. It was part of the shrine's magic—maybe it could help.

She glanced at Kael, her voice low. "Cover me."

Kael shot her a quick look, his eyes narrowing. "What are you—"

"Just do it," Ariana snapped, already moving.

Kael didn't argue. He shifted in front of her, his sword raised as he deflected another bolt of dark magic from the guardian. "Hurry!"

Ariana darted toward the pedestal, her heart racing as the air around her crackled with energy. She could feel the power of the artifact, its magic almost humming under her skin. Her necklace pulsed wildly now, the sensation almost overwhelming.

She reached out, her fingers brushing the surface of the glowing crystal, and a jolt of magic surged through her. The energy was cold, dark, but familiar in a way that made her blood run cold.

Ariana gritted her teeth, pushing through the sensation as she wrapped her hand around the artifact. The moment she touched it, the guardian let out a roar, its shadowy form twisting violently as the magic in the room shifted.

Kael's voice cut through the chaos. "Whatever you're doing, do it faster!"

Ariana held the artifact tightly, feeling its power surge through her. She didn't know what she was doing—only that this magic was tied to the shrine, to the shadows, and to the very thing that was trying to kill them.
