"Kirie...?"
The emergency lighting above washed over the room in a dull, pulsing red display like that of a strobe firework. The shadows were as blinding as black could be, vantablack displays of void nothingness that could easily blind just as good as the sun. The air smelt of oil, with a twinge of a metallic smell familiar to anyone who has ever had a wound inside of their mouth. The source of the smell was easily identifiable before him.
Kirie, in a form he had never seen before. A groteque presence of rotting flesh and exposed bone that radiated malice and danger not just by sight, but just being near the THING before him made a primal part of his mind scream at him to run away. Viscous black fluid dripped from her empty, wide eye sockets and cheekless jaw and onto the ground below, where it sizzled and combined with an aleady formed puddle. Looking down at the puddle, he could see that there were visible signs of decay and corrosion within the floor below as cracks formed in real time. If he looked close enough, he could see geometry that made his head hurt.
But by far, the most terrifying part of her were the appendages connected to her spinal area and writhing around idlely since his interruption. Each was equipped with a scythe of what looked to be cartilage on each of the appendages ends. It screamed killer, it screamed WMD.
It screamed cube spawn.
It hurt. It hurt to see his partner in crime, the one who introduced him into this dark world of secretive government projects and crimes against humanity, the one who gave him a face to the creatures who ruined his life so long ago... is one of the things he sought to rid the world of, or at least similar to the things.
They had a plan, a simple one... for his side, at least. Kirie was supposed to be the brains of the operation. They had a complex system of distractions from hacked technology within the facility itself, where as he would take to the vents with the layout and path she had marked. From there, he would take the origin cube and damage it intentionally in several targeted spots using a tool Kirie acquired from an unknown source. He pierced the seemingly indestructable casing of it and targeted the spots, specifically the center of the top of the cube and the lower left corner, effectively lobofomizing it and forcing it into a safe mode.
He had it in his grasp. It was the first face it saw, and it gave it the title of administrator after he lied to it. It pulsed rhythmically in its hands, reminding him that should the creature before him attack, he had a weapon of his own. He would kill the cube later. For now, it was a potential ally.
Kirie, after a moment of hesitation, cracked her head towards him. The sadistic smile she had on before he made his presence known transformed into a cheekless grimace. In truth, she hadn't expected him to be anywhere near her during the mission. She had to make a satisfactory false plan to cover up the massacre she would bring upon the facility they were attacking, both cubes and people alike. Her mission was a little different than Max's. Instead of destroying the only type he knows of, she plans to destroy all types. From the hivemind strain to the dissociated ones, including the growing little nightmares that would become something akin to gods when they grow up. Max would never allow something like that. She could only hope that he didn't spot the quivering cube hidden in the corner.
"...Max? What are you doing here? I thought we agreed to -" She was cut off by a low whimper from the corner of the room, speak of the devil. Both parties turned to the deepest shadow of the room, and there emerged a small girl no older than 10. Human features all around, yet the segments where each of her limbs and neck were supposed to connect seamlessly to her main body were filled with wires, telling Max that it could be a potential cube... but one unlike any he had ever seen. He looked at Kirie, and for a brief moment, he saw murderous intent directed at the girl and a subtle twitch to her appendages.
