At the house Mel had been making breakfast for himself and the killer. Two plates now full of eggs, bacon, and hash browns were on the counter. Michael hadn't come down yet from his attic bedroom. The old man made his way up the steps and arrived at the attic door. He knew that Michael may have his mask off so he knocked and called his name. He heard heavy footsteps and then the door swung open. He looked menacing in the doorway but Mel didn't care. "I made breakfast big guy. Nod if you wanna grab it yourself, shake your head if you want me to grab it." He asked. Michael nodded and followed Mel downstairs. He grabbed his plate and then Mel's phone rang. Of course the man answered the call and for a second looked at michael. "They're awake and okay." He said, trying to reassure the cold hearted killer. Michael nodded, guilt gripped his heart. He slipped away with the plate, he wasn't particularly hungry after harming his human, he felt that he didn't deserve the kindness he'd been shown.
Mel talked to Danny for a moment and when he hung up he decided to let Michael know that he would be leaving for the hospital. The older man once again walked up the steps and knocked on the door. Michael opened the door once again. "I'm gonna be out for a while. (Y/n) wants me to come down to the hospital to visit. You gonna be okay?" He said and in return Michael nodded. With that Mel locked up the house and got in his truck. The drive would take a while but he didn't mind. He put bluegrass music on as he drove.
Once he was at your room the image of you in the hospital bed, bandaged, and hooked up to machines made his heart sink. He never wanted to see his child like this. Your eyes lit up as you saw the man who raised you. "Mel!" You exclaimed. He smiled a warm smile and hugged you gently. Danny's golden eyes looked up at the two from his work. "Hey Mel, maybe you can talk sense into them. The doctor said they should stay for at least a week but they want to leave today." He said hoping Mel would side with him. (Y/n) looked up at Mel with puppy dog eyes. "Please don't make me stay....I hate hospitals..." Their voice trailed off at the end as memories of being in the hospital and mental institutions after their parents' deaths flooded into their mind. He knew it would be cruel to make them stay for too long but he also knew that the wounds needed to be watched for a few days. He sat on the bed and held their hand. "I know you hate it but you need to stay at least three days hun." He said calmly. You whined at his words, almost wanting to cry. "Shhh it's okay. It's just so that they can start to heal, after that I'll take you home and I'll take care of you." He continued.
Danny had no idea why you were so distraught over this. He kept his eyes on his tablet. He needed to finish the article soon so that he could beat anyone else to it. He stole a glance at you, they looked like they were on the verge of tears. He was very curious now as to why staying in a hospital elicited such a strong reaction. Danny made a mental note to find out why later on.
Mel managed to broker a deal, you stay for three days and he would visit every day. It wasn't perfect but it would work for now. The older man talked with the nurse on duty who in turn fetched (y/n)'s doctor. The doctor was a middle-aged man with neatly combed back short black hair. His white lab coat stood out among the nurses that rushed around to their patients. He looked cocky and he was thinking that he would simply push (y/n) into staying the entire week. He was about to be very, very wrong. Mel looked as casual, calm, and collected as ever. His calloused hands relaxed at his sides as the doctor walked up to him. Mel smiled a normal kind smile, and the doctor returned with a typical bedside manner smile. The doctors smile was about as genuine as fool's gold.
"Hi I'm dr. Jacobs. You must be (y/n)'s parent." He said in what can only be described as a pompous doctor voice. The older man nodded. He didn't get the chance to say his name before dr. Jacobs continued. "They're doing very well but the wounds are severe and do need to be observed by trained medical professionals. I understand that they want to leave today which would put them in danger of infections. I would like to stress just how dangerous the injuries are. I don't think you'd be able to care for them in their state." Mel put his hand up to stop the doctor from talking anymore.
"My name is Mel, and yes, I am (y/n)'s parent. They will stay for three days. Then I'm taking them home no matter what." He said, the doctor opened his mouth to argue but Mel didn't let him. "I am fully capable of taking care of them. If I really wanted to, I'd take them home today but I don't have a full set up at home. I was takin care of scrapes just as bad when you weren't even a thought in your parents' brains. So, lets try this again. What will be done in the next three days?"
Dr. Jacobs smile faltered a little, he wasn't used to having someone not just take his word. "I understand you but these wounds are severe sir. I don't think you're grasping the gravity of this situation." His voice was firm but Mel was having none of it. He rolled his eyes at the doctor and set his hands on his hips.
"Boy, what are you not gettin? You are gonna be a good doctor takin care of them for three days. Do all you can and then I will take care of it from there. You cannot keep them here if they choose to leave so this compromise is the best option." The older man shot back with such a relaxed tone that a nurse passing by could see it getting under the arrogant doctor's skin and smirked a little at the scene. Mel would never give in to the anger or frustration during a conversation. It was much more effective to stay levelheaded and relaxed, that way the other person could never have the satisfaction of seeing him bothered.
The doctor nodded and finally agreed to the arrangement. "They'll receive wound care everyday and probably antibiotics in order to keep infection away during their stay and we will send antibiotics home." Dr. Jacobs continued to talk to Mel for a while about the plan until Mel was satisfied with the care plan.
