The Monday after Evelyn and Derek's date felt like stepping into a whirlwind. All weekend, Evelyn had been floating on a cloud of happiness, replaying every moment of their night together—the starlit park, the chocolate brownies, the kiss that made her heart race. But now, back at school, reality came crashing down, and with it, the whispers.

It started the moment Evelyn walked into the hallway. She could feel the stares, the curious glances from her classmates, and the not-so-subtle murmurs that followed her down the corridor.

"Did you hear? Evelyn and Derek are, like, totally a thing now."

"Yeah, I saw them at the park the other night. They were all over each other!"

"No way! Evelyn Parker and Derek James? I didn't think she was his type."

Evelyn's stomach twisted uncomfortably. She wasn't used to being the center of attention, and the gossip swirling around her only made her more anxious. She knew people talked about Derek—he was the school's star quarterback, after all—but she wasn't prepared for them to be talking about her, too.

When she reached her locker, Britney was waiting for her, a huge grin on her face.

"Spill. Now," Britney demanded, bouncing on her heels. "I need details. How was the date? What did you wear? Did you guys kiss? Tell me everything!"

Evelyn couldn't help but smile at her best friend's excitement, but the butterflies in her stomach still wouldn't settle.

"It was... amazing," Evelyn admitted, opening her locker and pulling out her books for the day. "We had dinner at this cute little restaurant, and then we went to the park. He set up a blanket and everything—it was really sweet."

"And?" Britney pressed, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Did you guys kiss?"

Evelyn felt her cheeks heat up, and she ducked her head to hide the blush. "Yeah, we kissed."

Britney squealed, practically jumping up and down. "I knew it! I knew you two would be perfect together. So, what's the deal? Are you guys, like, official now?"

Evelyn hesitated. She hadn't really thought about what the kiss meant, at least not in concrete terms. The date had felt like the start of something, but they hadn't talked about being a couple yet.

"I'm not sure," Evelyn admitted, biting her lip. "I mean, we haven't really talked about it. It was just... a really nice night, and everything felt right, but I don't know if we're 'official' yet."

Britney frowned, her excitement dimming slightly. "Well, people are definitely talking. I overheard some girls saying you and Derek were basically a thing now."

Evelyn's heart sank. She didn't want everyone making assumptions about her and Derek before they even had a chance to figure things out for themselves. The last thing she needed was more pressure, especially with everything going on at home.

Britney must have noticed the shift in Evelyn's mood because she softened her tone. "Hey, don't worry about it. People always talk. Just focus on what you want, okay? If you and Derek are meant to be, then it'll happen when it's supposed to."

Evelyn nodded, grateful for Britney's support. But as they walked to class, she couldn't shake the feeling that things were about to get a lot more complicated.

The rest of the morning was a blur. Everywhere Evelyn went, she could feel the weight of people's eyes on her, as if they were waiting for her to confirm or deny the rumors. By lunchtime, her anxiety had reached a boiling point, and she wasn't sure how much more she could take.

She was sitting with Britney in the cafeteria, picking at her salad, when Derek walked in. As soon as he appeared, the whispers started up again, and Evelyn's heart raced in her chest. She hadn't seen him since the date, and now, with everyone watching, she had no idea how to act.
