Third POV
Percy ran around the park as fast as his seven year old legs would carry him. A wide grin on his face as another kid tried to catch and tag him. He looked behind him to see how close the other kid was and immediately slammed into the plastic slide. He hit the woodchips hard and groaned.
"Are you ok?" The kid that was chasing him asked with child like worry. Percy blinked his eyes. His vision was a little blurry, but he felt fine and it was going away so he stood back up and nodded. Ignoring his dizziness. "Yeah. I'm ok." He said. "Oh, ok. Tag! You're it!" The other kid yelled and ran off. Percy laughed and ran after him, righting himself whenever he started to drift to the side.
He managed to tag another kid, despite his dizziness and continued to play tag with the other kids. However, slowly the other kids had to go home. After the last kid left, Percy sat in the sandbox. Using water from the water fountain to make the sand stick.
He knew his mom was working late since she hadn't come to get him yet. Gabe was likely drunk so he was useless no matter what. As Percy played, he felt something. It was like he was being watched. He would periodically stop and look around, his head swiveling around only to find nothing.
That didn't stop the feeling though. His ears rang. The tiny hairs on the back of his neck and on his arms stood up. His heartbeat and his breathing quickened as hus anxiety grew. His teeth was clenched and his jaw set. Then...a twig behind him snapped and Percy shot off. He had no idea what it was that made the noise and he didn't want to know. Nor did he need to know for him to not like it. He also knew it was following him from the heavy foot falls behind him.
"Gonna need to run faster than that kid. Although, gotta say, damn. You are surprisingly fast."
Percy screamed as he heard a voice all around him. Of course, he immediately thought it was the thing behind him and to his credit, he didn't even slowly down.
"Woah, woah. Calm down kiddo. I ain't the one tryna kill ya." The voice laughed. "Actually, I'm here to help." It said. 'Not being very helpful!' Percy automatically thought. Not, 'who are you'. 'Where are you' . Nope. Percy's first instinct was to immediately sass the disembodied voice. Cause why not. Luckily, the voice seemed to not care. In fact, he enjoyed Percy's reply.
"Hell yeah, I'm gonna like you!" The voice laughed loudly. Percy noticed that his laugh sounded vaguely like a monkey's howl. "Also, fair. Let me help ya kid. So, you're not gonna be able go out run that thing. It's actually not trying to catch you right now. It's just messing with you." Percy gulped as a feeling of dread came over him. Even if he couldn't fully grasp why he felt dread at that little fact, he could to some extent understand how he was supposed to feel helpless in this situation.
"But! Not to worry! You've got me on your team and honestly, no one is better to have." The voice laughed. 'Cool! Still not helping!' The voice stopped. "Right. Right. Rip out a strand of your hair." Percy almost stopped completely, but he remembered that he was being chased and continued going, even with his legs burning.
"I'm serious! Just do it! You want help? I'm helping, but you gotta help yourself too! It's called 'help' for a reason. I'm helping you do something, not doing it for you. Now, rip out a piece of your hair and imagine it turning into a staff. No need to be specific. Just picture big stick." Percy reached up and snatched a piece of his hair out. It was more than just one strand, but who cared.
He then pictured a big stick and a big stick he now had.
The hair glowed gold and exploded into a large staff like weapon. The shock made him fall to the ground, rolling. He skidded to a stop and immediately scrambled to his feet. Grasping the staff close to him. Well, at least as much as he could. He stared into the darkness as two red eyes stared back at him. A dog the size of a mini-cooper slowly stepped out. His lips pulled back in a vicious snarl. Fear grabbed Percy in a chokehold as his body ran cold. Sweat trickled down his forehead and neck and goosebumps formed on his body.
"Hey, hey. Don't you bitch out on me now! You gotta fight this thing!" Percy shook his head as he started hyperventilating. He couldn't even respond. "Hey! No! You! Can! Do! This!" The voice yelled. "You're special. If you're really that scared, think about your mom. You don't wanna die and leave her with that Gavin guy, do you?" At first, Percy wondered who Gavin was then he figured that the voice was talking about Gabe.
Percy immediately thought about what that would he like and his fear turned into determination. He took a deep breath and it was like he woke up from a nap. His vision cleared and his hearing became sharper.
"That's right! Now, go with the flow. Just go with what feels natural." Percy nodded and adjusted his grip on the staff. It wasn't the best, but he clearly had an idea on how use it. This was proven when he swung the pole downward, just barely missing the oversized dog as it jumped to the side. Percy drew that staff back and swung it to the side, catching the dog in the jaw. Percy capitalized on the hit and jabbed the staff forward, crushing its snout.
When the thing was dazed Percy tried the overhead again and it worked. Percy jumped up and brought the staff down onnits head, crushing it completely and killing the giant dog. Percy stood there for a bit, then the adrenaline wore off. His body sagged and he fell to the ground.
"Good job kiddo. I knew you could it." The voice sounded proud and Percy smiled at its tone. "What was that thing?" He asked out loud. "Hellhound. Big doggo from the pits of hell." The voice replied. Percy hummed tiredly. "Uh-uh. Nope, get up. You gotta get home. Or, at least back to the park. You're mom is gonna be worried sick if she gets there and sees you're gone." Percy pushed himself to his feet, knowing the voice was right. He started sluggishly walking back, dragging the staff with him.
"What's your name?" Percy asked the voice. "Sun Wukong, the badest badass to ever badass." The voice, replied cockily. Percy was too tired to care though. "Nice to meet you Sun. I'm Percy Jackson." Percy also introduced himself. "I know already kid."
"Oh."
