The air in the ceremonial grounds was thick with anticipation. The tribe had gathered, their faces illuminated by the flickering flames of the torches surrounding the sacred stone altar. Daoyi stood at the center, dressed in the flowing ceremonial robes of the Kampe tribe, his long hair braided intricately and adorned with beads. The weight of the moment pressed down on him, heavier than ever before.

This ritual was not just the final step in his engagement to Kenyai. It was a rite of passage, a sacred ceremony that would mark his transition into adulthood, solidify his role as a Carrier, and confirm his place in the tribe’s future. Yet, despite Kenyai’s constant reassurances, Daoyi still felt a flicker of doubt deep within him.

The Priestess, an elderly woman with white hair braided into a crown, stepped forward, raising her arms to the sky. Her voice, strong and clear, rang out into the night.

“We gather tonight in the presence of the Goddess, to witness the blessing of Daoyi, Carrier of the Kampe tribe. May the Goddess reveal her will, and may she guide us in this new era.”

Daoyi felt Kenyai’s presence beside him, his steady hand resting gently on his back. Kenyai leaned in slightly, whispering, “You’ve got this.”

Daoyi nodded, though his heart still raced. His eyes drifted across the gathered crowd, landing on his parents—High Chief Kennan and Amaela—who watched with a mixture of pride and worry. Abeta stood near the back, her arms crossed, her expression unreadable.

The Priestess began the ritual, chanting ancient words in the language of the ancestors, her voice carrying through the still night air. The tribe watched in silence, their eyes fixed on Daoyi.

As the chanting continued, the Priestess’s hands hovered above the sacred fire. “Goddess, we ask you to speak through this flame. Show us your will for Daoyi, your chosen Carrier.”

Suddenly, the flames roared to life, shooting upward in a brilliant blaze of gold and crimson. The crowd gasped, some stepping back in awe. The Priestess’s eyes fluttered shut as her body stiffened, her face contorting as if she were in a trance.

Kenyai tensed beside Daoyi, his hand tightening around Daoyi’s arm. “What’s happening?” he whispered, concern lacing his voice.

“I don’t know,” Daoyi replied, his own heart pounding as the Priestess began to speak, her voice deeper, otherworldly.

“The Goddess speaks!” the Priestess’s voice boomed, startling everyone. “Daoyi, Carrier of the Kampe tribe, you are more than you appear. You are not merely a vessel for future life, nor are you bound by the roles that have been placed upon you.”

Daoyi’s breath caught in his throat. The crowd murmured in confusion, their eyes wide as they listened.

“The Goddess has seen your struggles,” the Priestess continued, her voice still resonating with an ethereal power. “She knows the pain of those who question your worth, who doubt your purpose. But fear not, for you are chosen for a greater destiny.”

Daoyi stared at the Priestess, his heart racing. He wanted to speak, to ask questions, but the words wouldn’t come.

The Priestess’s eyes snapped open, glowing with a light that was not her own. “The tribe has long placed value in separation—of men and women, of strength and nurturing, of warrior and healer. But you, Daoyi, are the bridge. You unite the masculine and feminine within you, embodying both the strength of the warrior and the nurturing of the healer.”

A murmur swept through the crowd as the Priestess’s words sank in. Daoyi felt the weight of her proclamation settle on his shoulders, heavier than any burden he had ever carried.

“The future of the Kampe tribe will not be built on the rigid boundaries of the past,” the Priestess said, her voice rising. “It will be shaped by those who can embrace both sides of themselves—those who can lead with compassion and defend with strength. Daoyi, you are the key to this new era.”

Kenyai’s hand found Daoyi’s, squeezing tightly. “Do you hear that? It’s you,” he whispered, his voice filled with awe. “You’re the one who will lead us.”

Daoyi swallowed, his throat tight with emotion. “But… can I really do that?” he asked quietly, his voice barely audible over the crackling flames.

The Priestess turned toward Daoyi, as if sensing his doubt. “The Goddess has given you her blessing, Daoyi. You are the future of this tribe. Trust in her, and trust in yourself.”

For a long moment, the only sound was the crackle of the fire. The tribe stood in stunned silence, grappling with the revelation. Abeta’s face was pale, her earlier smugness completely gone. Even High Chief Kennan looked shaken, though his gaze never left Daoyi.

Finally, Daoyi found his voice, though it trembled as he spoke. “I… I don’t know if I’m ready,” he admitted, his eyes searching the Priestess’s for reassurance.

The Priestess’s expression softened, the glow fading from her eyes. “None of us are ever truly ready for what the Goddess asks of us,” she said gently. “But you are not alone. Your family, your tribe, and the Goddess herself will be with you every step of the way.”

Kenyai stepped closer, his hand still gripping Daoyi’s. “And so will I,” he said firmly, his voice filled with quiet determination. “I believe in you. We’ll do this together.”

Daoyi looked into Kenyai’s eyes, seeing the unwavering support and affection there. Slowly, he nodded. “Together,” he repeated.

The Priestess raised her arms again, her voice ringing out one final time. “The Goddess has spoken! Daoyi, you are her chosen Carrier, and your path is blessed. Let all who stand here bear witness to this new beginning!”

The crowd, still stunned by the revelation, began to murmur amongst themselves. Some faces were filled with awe, others with uncertainty, but the shift in the air was palpable. Daoyi could feel it—something had changed. Not just in the tribe, but within himself.

As the ceremony concluded, High Chief Kennan approached, his eyes shining with pride and emotion. “Daoyi,” he said, his voice thick, “you’ve always made me proud, but tonight… tonight I see the greatness in you that I’ve always known was there.”

Amaela stepped forward, her hand resting gently on Daoyi’s arm. “You were born for this, my son,” she said softly, her voice filled with warmth. “The Goddess chose you for a reason.”

Daoyi looked at his parents, his heart swelling with a mixture of gratitude and determination. “Thank you,” he whispered, feeling the weight of their belief in him.

As the night sky stretched above them, Daoyi stood taller, his doubts slowly fading away. The Goddess had spoken. His path was clear, and though it was a path filled with uncertainty and challenge, he would walk it—alongside Kenyai, his family, and his tribe.

For the first time, he truly believed in the role he was destined to play.
