The yacht glides smoothly over the glistening water as we near the dock. I stand at the edge of the boat, leaning against the railing, my fingers brushing the cool metal as I gaze out at the shimmering loch. The salty breeze whips through my hair, tugging loose strands, but it does nothing to clear the fog in my mind. The laughter and chatter from my friends behind me on the deck fades into the background, drowned out by the steady pulse of the waves and my own swirling thoughts

We slow down as the dock comes into view. I can hear the soft hum of the engine beneath me, feel the slight shift in the boat's movement as it prepares to settle

I sense him before I hear him

Charles steps down from the top floor, the sound of his feet pattering lightly against the wooden deck. I don't turn to face him, but I know he's there—his presence unmistakeable, a weight that presses against the tension already coiled inside me

We stop. The boat rocks gently as it drifts the last few feet into place. From the corner of my eye, I watch Charles secure the yacht, tying it off with effortless precision. He's close now, his shoulder brushing past mine, and I finally tear my gaze from the water

"Here" he says quietly, holding out the boat keys. His voice is calm, but there's an edge to it, something unspoken hanging between us

Lifting my gaze from the floor, I glance down at his hand, my fingers hesitating before I take the keys from him. The brief contact makes my pulse quicken, but I keep my expression neutral, locking the unease behind a practiced façade

I nod, slipping the keys into the pocket of the white dress I had changed into, but I still don't meet his eyes

For a moment, neither of us moves. The quiet lingers, the space between us heavy with everything left unsaid
