When I opened my eyes, I was horrified to see the ceiling of the hospital. I turned my head and so many familiar faces came rushing to my side. A strange man, who I didn't recognise spoke,
"Give her some breathing space, she is probably very confused".
The man was right, I was! Why was I in the hospital? The last thing I remember was trying to get my netball gear for the second time.
"We'll try as much as we can doctor, but you can't stop me from hugging my own daughter".
That was mum. Always very defensive but caring.
"Wh-at am I doing in here" I asked.
"Well Angie, you fainted and banged your head pretty hard on the floor. You were knocked unconscious for several minutes. If it wasn't for your friend Ella here, we would probably be facing a very different situation" the doctor replied.
I only just noticed Ella when the doctor mentioned her name. She seemed some what uncomfortable. Standing in the corner of the room next to her step mum. At that moment, I suddenly remembered the importance of today!
"Wait- what about netball! WE WERE ON OUR WA-"
I was cut off by the soothing voice of my father.
"Darling, relax! We contacted your team. Everything is fine".
"But- but! What about the game! We were two players short with no subs! Did we win! Can we still reach the finals?!?".
My anger rose as I became more anxious. My mum attempted to calm me down,
"Sweety, I don't think you need to be worrying about things like that. All you should be focusing on is getting better".
"GETTING BETTER! BETTER! THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH ME! I WAS JUST TIRED AND SLIPPED! THAT'S ALL!".
My voice was beginning to raise.
"Angie, I'm sure your hypothesis is some what correct but it's the hospitals protocol to scan your brain for any reason for faintness".
I was muting the doctors words and was eagerly edgy on my bed.
"When can I leave?!" I demanded.
"As soon as your results come back from the lab" the doctor explained.
"I'll come back as soon as I receive your scans".
The doctor left the room and I groaned loudly. Why me! Out of all the people, I had to be the one to faint on the day of the netball semifinals! Ella's mum was heading for the door and nudging for Ella to do the same.
"Well I think we better head off, Ella is looking pretty tired. It's been a rough day...for all of us".
"Thank you so much Maria, we really appreciate all your help".
Mum and Mariah went into the hall way and started to chat.
"Well I hope you feel better soon" Ella said awkwardly.
I coudln't help notice how distressed she looked standing there.
"Are you ok Ella?" I asked.
"Shouldn't I be the one asking you that?" she snapped back.
Fortunately dad interrupted our conversation.
"I think your mum is waiting for you Ella".
"Thanks Mr Crow",
and with that said, she just left. Mum re-entered the room and came rushing back to my bedside.
"How are you feeling sweety?" she asked.
"I feel like I want to go home" I moaned.
My parents glanced at each other.
"Well you heard what the doctor said, we have to wait for your results. But I promise, as soon as they get here we will take you home".
Mum always knew what to say when I was feeling down.
Hours past before the doctor finally came back with my scan papers. He had a worried look on his face.
"May I have a word with your parents in the hall way for a moment Angie?" the doctor asked.
I nodded and my mum gave me a reassuring smile. They exited into the hallway and from where they were standing I could see my parents in the reflection of the window. And from what I saw my mum seemed to be shocked by something. She gasped and cried into my dad's arms. I was extremely nervous now.
"Doctor? Is everthing alright?" I shouted from my room.
There was no reply. He seemed to still be explaining something to my parents. As the suspense over through me, I jumped out of the bed and stumbled over to the door. Pain was rushing to my head but I tried to ignore it the best I could. I stood under the door frame listening in on their conversation.
"So what does this mean?!?" my mum asked.
What I heard next made me fall to the ground once again. This time in awe from what I had heard. This next line the doctor spoke, changed my life forever.
"Angie could have a severe case of brain cancer".
