Yeji Saint Claire

Sunday morning arrived far too soon. I blinked awake in my hotel room, the early sunlight seeping through the blinds.

My body aches so bad, what the hell.

The memories of last night's race entered my thoughts—Katarina, Ryujin drawing the cops away, the adrenaline, the disappointment, ugh. Whatever. I let out a slow breath and turned to check my phone on the nightstand.

Nothing.

Barely any notifications except for a few updates from social media apps, some spam emails, and gossip from a group chat with a bunch of friends I'm not even close with.

I frowned, realizing I'd never asked Ryujin for her number. How could I have been around her so much and not once thought about it?

As if she'll give it anyway.

I mentally slapped myself for letting Ryujin be the first thing I thought about this morning. Clearly she was getting under my skin, but seriously, can you blame me?

I closed my phone again, staring at the ceiling for a moment as I gathered the willpower to get up.

Beep.

I glanced over at my phone and saw a message from my mom. She's definitely missing us back home.

From: Mommy Saint [6:40 am]
'Hey sweetheart, how are you and Hyunjin doing in Michigan? Is he looking after you?
Are you both eating properly?'

I smiled at the concern in her message. Even though we were grown adults, she still worried about the little things, like making sure we were eating well. I feel a little guilty now. Street racing's definitely the least my mom would want us to be doing, knowing they work in a law firm. It's ironic, really. Minji's the only one who's decent.

Sorry, mother. Your twins are devil spawns.

Hyunjin and I are the best when it comes to mischief. Even our parents aren't safe with the pranks we've pulled before.

Smiling, I replied quickly, fingers tapping against the screen.

To: Mommy Saint [6:45 am]
Hey, Mom. We're doing good. Hyunjin's keeping an eye on me, don't worry. We've been eating well too—found some good places here.

She responded almost immediately.

From: Mommy Saint [6:47 am]
Good to hear! Have you made any friends yet?

I hesitated, my mind drifting to the days before. Without realizing it, a small smile tugged at the corners of my lips.

To: Mommy Saint [6:49 am]
Yeah, I've met some people. I'm trying my best to get to know them. Especially one person. She's lovely.

I quickly shook that thought away and pressed send. I wasn't about to spill everything to my mom over a text.

From: Mommy Saint [6:52 am]
That's wonderful! Hope you can introduce them soon. Just make sure you're staying safe, okay?
I love you.

To: Mommy Saint [6:54 am]
Love you too, Mom. Talk soon.

I sighed after sending the message, putting my phone back down. Shaking the thought away, I forced myself to get up. After a quick shower, I pulled on some running clothes and headed out the door. A jog would help clear my head and plan things for the next week.

Here goes nothing.
