The night air was crisp, and the soft crackling of the fire pit filled the silence between you and Mia. Your heart was still racing from her confession, the warmth of her hand lingering in yours. For a moment, it felt like the entire world had narrowed down to just the two of you standing under the twinkling fairy lights, surrounded by the eerie ambiance of the Halloween night.
Mia took a deep breath, her playful energy replaced by something deeper, more meaningful. Her eyes flickered to the pumpkin sitting in the center of the fire pit. "So, I kind of went all out with this," she admitted, her usual confident grin flashing across her face. "But, hey, it's Halloween! I thought we could do something fun together—something special."
You tilted your head, intrigued. "What do you have in mind?"
Mia's eyes gleamed with mischief as she stepped closer to the pumpkin, the firelight casting shadows across her face. "This is no ordinary pumpkin. It's part of a Halloween ritual. Legend has it that if two people carve their names into the same pumpkin on Halloween night and make a wish, something magical happens."
You couldn't help but laugh softly, amused by the elaborate setup. "Really? And what kind of magic are we talking about?"
Mia shrugged, a playful smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "I guess we'll find out, won't we? But first, we need to finish the carving."
You raised an eyebrow, glancing at the intricately carved pumpkin. "It looks like you've already done all the hard work."
"Not yet," she replied, holding up a small, silver carving tool. "I saved the most important part for last—your name."
Your breath caught in your throat as she handed you the tool, her fingers brushing against yours. The moment felt heavy with meaning, as if this small act of carving your name into the pumpkin symbolized something much bigger. You took the tool, your hands trembling slightly as you knelt down in front of the pumpkin.
Mia watched you closely, her expression softening. "Go ahead," she encouraged. "Write your name. And don't forget to make a wish."
You hesitated for a moment, your mind racing with possibilities. What should you wish for? The answer came to you almost immediately. You wanted this—whatever was happening between you and Mia—to be real. You wanted her to feel the same way about you as you did about her. And maybe, just maybe, this silly little ritual would help make that happen.
With careful precision, you carved your name into the pumpkin, right next to Mia's. As the last letter took shape, you closed your eyes and silently made your wish.
*I wish for Mia and I to be more than just friends.*
The moment you finished, a gust of wind swept through the backyard, causing the fire to flicker and the fairy lights to sway. You opened your eyes, startled by the sudden change in the atmosphere. Mia's gaze met yours, her expression unreadable.
"Did you feel that?" you asked, your voice barely above a whisper.
She nodded slowly, her eyes wide with wonder. "Yeah... That was weird."
For a long moment, the two of you stood there in silence, the only sound being the crackling of the fire and the distant hum of the party inside. You could feel the tension between you, thick and electric, as if something monumental had just shifted between the two of you.
Mia finally broke the silence, her voice soft and hesitant. "So... what did you wish for?"
You hesitated, unsure if you should tell her. Would it be too much? Too soon? But before you could answer, Mia stepped closer, her hand gently brushing against your arm. "It's okay. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."
You swallowed hard, your heart pounding in your chest. "What did you wish for?" you asked, trying to deflect the question back to her.
Mia smiled, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "That's a secret," she teased, her playful tone returning. "But maybe... if you stick around for the rest of the night, I'll tell you."
You couldn't help but laugh, the tension between you easing slightly. "I guess I'll have to stay then."
Mia grinned, her eyes locking onto yours with an intensity that made your heart skip a beat. "Good," she whispered. "Because this night is just getting started."
