"ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS!" exclaimed Claire, again her voice cutting through the laughter and music, piercing the night air like a sudden chill. Everyone stopped, their conversations trailing off as they turned to stare at her, bewildered expressions replacing their carefree joy.
Liam looked at her, concern etching his features. "What's going on?" he asked, rising to his feet, his arm dropping away from her as he sought to understand her sudden outburst.
But Claire didn't answer him. All she could see was Alex, his lips pressed against another woman's, and a tidal wave of rage and heartbreak surged through her. The world around her blurred as she pushed herself to her feet, determination flooding her veins.
"Claire, wait!" Lila called out, finally noticing that Claire was no longer just shocked but was now taking charge, heading straight for Alex. Lila's heart raced as she realized the intensity of the situation. She quickly jumped up from her seat, leaving Mark behind, and ran after Claire.
"Claire!" Lila shouted, trying to catch up as Claire stormed across the sand, her bare feet sinking into the grains with every furious step.
The beach party had faded into a distant echo, the fire's glow behind her now nothing more than a backdrop to the tempest of emotions raging within her. The laughter, the warmth, and the fleeting sense of freedom were all drowned out by the realization of betrayal standing before her.
As Claire closed the distance, her heartbeat pounded in her ears. She could feel the eyes of her friends on her, but they felt like shadows—unimportant compared to the very real figure of Alex entwined with another woman. She could hear Lila's voice fading behind her, but her focus was singular now. She needed answers, and she needed them now.
With every stride, she felt the weight of the night crashing down on her, a mix of exhilaration and dread. This moment would define everything—the choices she had made, the life she had momentarily escaped, and the heart that had been fractured in her absence. And as she approached, Claire knew this confrontation would change everything.
"Alex!" she shouted, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and disbelief as she reached him. The intimacy of the moment felt surreal, the woman beside him looking up with wide eyes, clearly shocked by the intrusion.
Alex turned, surprise flickering across his face before it morphed into something she couldn't quite read—guilt? Regret? "Claire? What are you doing here?" he stammered, stepping away from the woman, who looked between them, caught in the awkwardness.
"Are you fucking serious right now?" Claire shot back, her voice rising in pitch. "I just saw you kissing that! What the hell, Alex?!"
Lila, breathless from running, finally caught up. She stared at Alex in shock, her eyes widening as they darted to the other woman. "Alex?!" she screamed, disbelief and confusion cutting through her voice as she stared at the scene before her. The woman shrunk back under Lila's gaze, clearly not expecting such a public confrontation.
The woman, sensing the tension, quickly tried to excused herself, mumbling something about needing to find her friends.
"Oh no, you don't," Lila said, grabbing her firmly by the arm. The woman sat down reluctantly, shrinking under Lila's intense stare. Claire's focus remained laser-sharp on Alex. The fury coursing through her veins felt alive, ready to erupt.
"Claire, baby, I can explain—" he began, but she cut him off.
"Explain? How can you possibly explain this?" Her hands balled into fists at her sides. "I come here to escape for just a moment, and I find you making out with some random girl at the bar?"
