The class on Boggarts was all just background noise to Jane as she sat at her seat. She was lucky that she didn't get called on for anything because she probably wouldn't even have registered that much.
Her brain was a pingpong table, her thoughts bouncing back and forth. On one side she thought about the complicated relationship she had with two particular Slytherin boys, and the fears it may soon become even more convoluted. Then on the other side she was thinking about how the most adorable guy in the world had kissed her last night. That one made her heart do flips every time it came around.
How could Boggarts compare to a handsome redhead with freckles that covered his face like stars. There was no time to learn about the creature's origins when she had so much other important stuff to think about!!
Observant as ever Poppy seemed to know something was off with her (although, let's be real, anyone could probably tell she was out of it). In the middle of class Jane felt a push on her elbow, and noticed a little slip of paper slipped underneath. She unfolded it and read.
-Are you feeling okay today?
Jane pulled the page over to her quill and ink bottle and started scribbling a reply before she slipped it back over.
-Yeah I'm okay I just have a lot on my mind.
-A lot of school on your mind or a lot of boys on your mind?
She turned towards the Hufflepuff, her eyes blaring into the side of her head, but Poppy didn't even peak over.
-If I say boys does that make me sound like a pick me?
-Do you mean a pixie?
-No. You're right though, it is the boys.
-Do you want to talk about it?
-Yes! Are you free after Charms? Could we go down to visit Highwing??
-YES!!!

After charms class the two girls waved goodbye to Natty, who was leaving them to go and talk to her mom. Jane watched Poppy wave frantically towards her, her face looking oddly relieved. She was surprised to see the Hufflepuff's response to the other girl leaving- it normally seemed like Poppy wanted to be with Natty all of the time.
Together they walked out onto the grounds of the castle, pulling their cloaks tighter as they went. They chatted idly about their two classes, and then some about their upcoming beasts class. Her friend's attitude from before was still bothering her though, so Jane decided she'd ask.
"You seemed kind of relieved when Natty left earlier, which surprised me. I thought you guys were really getting along."
Almost immediately Poppy's whole face turned a light shade of pink. Jane stopped walking, confused as to why that had been her reaction.
"We are getting along well, really well I think-" her face started to turn a bit darker. "-I mean, I enjoy spending time with her."
"So why did you want her not to come with us today? Or did I misjudge that?"
The Hufflepuff fiddled with her fingers as she stood just ahead.
"No, it's true- I was glad... I mean not that I wouldn't want to spend time with her, I just... I was hoping that maybe I could talk to you about her..."
"You wanted to talk about Natty with me?" She asked quizzically. The girl just nodded.
Jane paused as she placed the puzzle pieces together. The memory of their Hogsmead trip popped into her brain, and she remembered her friend's behavior towards the other Gryffindor. It seemed that memory, mixed with this conversation, was enough to put it all into place.
