The blanket was tattered and worn, but soft- and he was grateful. Castiel looked up at the little girl from where he sat on the ground. She had draped the blanket over his shoulders without a word. She must have seen him shivering. He wasn't used to feeling cold since he had only recently become human. He was starting to realize that being without a home was more difficult when you needed things such as food and sleep.

"Hello," said Castiel grinning up at her, "what is your name?" The girl didn't answer. She simply sat down, huddled up next to him, and adjusted the blanket so it covered them both. "My name is Castiel," he continued hoping it would elicit a response from her.

After a few beats of silence the girl mumbled shyly, "Can you watch over me? I'm scared something will happen if I fall asleep by myself." This wasn't what Castiel was expecting her to say, and he didn't understand why she was not sleeping in a bed, but he couldn't refuse the adorable young girl who shared her blanket with him.

"I've been told by my friend Dean that many people don't like being watched over in their sleep, but as an angel it was my duty to take care of you humans. Now that I'm also human I suppose I could continue to do my previous job. So yes, I will watch over you if that is what you wish."

The recently orphaned girl who had run away from social services again was quite understandably a bit confused about the whole used to be an angel thing, but it didn't deter her from laying her head in this strangers, Castiel's, lap and closing her eyes. She didn't know what made her trust him so much, but a gut feeling told her he was one of the good guys.
