Amelia Brooks adjusted the strap of her sleek, black evening gown and looked at herself in the mirror. She had been to hundreds of events like this, always keeping her guard up, always playing the game of power and politics in the business world. But tonight felt different. There was a tension in the air she couldn't quite place.
The annual New York Business Elite Gala was notorious for being more about secret deals and whispered conversations than philanthropy. Amelia was used to the pretense. As the CEO of Brooks Enterprises, she had built a reputation as a woman who could navigate any room, close any deal. She didn't know it yet, but tonight, she was about to encounter someone who played a far more dangerous game.
As she made her way through the crowd, she caught sight of him. Luciano Moretti. The name alone sent a ripple through the room. He stood with an aura of dominance, his broad shoulders draped in a custom-tailored black suit, his dark eyes scanning the crowd with calculated precision. He was handsome, in a dangerous sort of way. And everyone knew it. His presence commanded attention, the kind that left people wondering if they should admire or fear him.
When their eyes met, Amelia felt a chill run down her spine. He smiled—slow, deliberate, almost predatory. She held his gaze for a moment longer than she should have. There was something dangerous in his eyes, something that warned her to stay away. But Amelia had never been the kind to back down from a challenge.
"Ms. Brooks," a deep voice said from behind her. She turned and found herself face-to-face with him. His cologne, rich and intoxicating, invaded her senses. Up close, he was even more striking, his chiseled jaw and intense eyes framed by the soft lighting of the ballroom.
"Mr. Moretti," she responded coolly, holding her ground. "I didn't expect to see you here."
"I like to surprise people," he said, his lips curving into a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "But I think you already knew that."
Their conversation was sharp, filled with subtle tension. Luca's interest in Amelia was clear, but Amelia wasn't so easily impressed. She knew men like him, men who thought they could control everything. But she was different. She wasn't someone who could be bought or manipulated.
Still, as the night wore on, the pull between them grew undeniable. They danced, their bodies close, moving to the slow, seductive rhythm of the music. His hand on the small of her back sent a shiver through her, and she hated that she felt so drawn to him. His proximity made it hard to think, hard to remember that he was dangerous.
"You intrigue me, Amelia," Luca whispered, his lips brushing her ear as they danced. "But I wonder... are you ready for what comes with me?"
