The Butterfly
I spent the entire week feeling like I was just floating through the motions. I hadn't heard from or seen Zack since he'd dropped me off Saturday. Though I had heard plenty going around campus about him.
"Zack? He's wild. I've never seen him so drunk. It was fun though." I heard girls whispering and giggling about him at the Cafe this morning.
I glared at them and the looks I got in return were expressions of shock. I raised my brow as I realized they were staring at the hoodie I wore.
Damn it.
Had I been wearing his hoodie the entire week? That would explain all the other confusing looks I'd gotten over the past few days.
Stacy burst into the dorm and derailed my train of thought.
"Wha-"
"Zack just got into a fight, it's still happening in front of the dorms!" She blurted.
I wanted to say I didn't care but somehow before I could even think about it I was already running down the steps.
"Zack! Stop it!" I screamed as I pushed through the door, seeing him wailing on some other guy. There was a crowd of other students that just stood around, some staring in shock but most were cheering or booing like this was some sort of show.
"Elle! Don't!" Stacy tried to pull me away but I easily slipped from her grasp.
In one quick motion I pushed Zack off of his bruised victim. Just as I pulled him away another student helped up the one Zack had totally fucked up. He looked like his nose was broken. Zack on the other hand, didn't have a scratch other than his bloodied knuckles that I noticed.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" I pushed him back as far as I could with my hands on his chest. The smell that hit my nose made me put two and two together. "Are you fucking drunk? Are you kidding me Zack?"
"Yea, get control of your boyfriend!" The student Zack had pummeled shouted at me and I spun on my heels towards him.
"Back off, unless you want to get your ass beat by a girl too." I stood my ground as the crowd gasped watching the interaction. A second later he took the hint and backed off. It was a miracle campus security hadn't shown up.
I turned back to Zack who was glaring as the bloodied guy walked away. His eyes softened as they met mine once I was right in front of him. My eyes scanned over him, checking for any damage I'd missed.
I reached up and turned his head, tracing my fingers over a bruise that was starting to form along his jaw. He winced slightly in pain but he didn't make me stop. I turned his head back to face me.
"You're a fucking idiot. Give me your keys." I demanded and he opened his mouth to protest but he knew I wouldn't take no for an answer.
He let out a breath of defeat and pulled his keys from his pocket. I took them, grabbing his wrist to pull him to his car. I felt a slight hint of resistance but it was gone a second later.
"Get in the car." I continued to make demands like he'd done the other day, though he wasn't putting up a fight like I had.
He climbed into the passenger seat of his car like a kid who'd just gotten busted by his mom. I held back a laugh, not wanting him to think I wasn't as mad.
I slammed his door before I made my way to the driver's side.

The drive to his apartment was silent.
