OH ANA,
CHAPTER ONE
( LITTLE BITTY TOWN )Forks, Washington
Monday, January 17th, 2005Anastasia Swan bolted as quickly as she could through the airport doors, leaving her twin straggling behind. It took a quick scan to spot her Dads police cruiser sticking out like a sore thumb, all other cars avoiding being around the cop. She quickly took off towards it.
"Dad!" Ana called out in her pursuit. Charlie Swan was already turning towards the sound of her voice by the time she reached him. Ana let go of her suitcases and launched her arms around her Dads neck.
Charlie grunted but quickly caught her. "Hey there Peanut."
Ana let go and beamed at him. "Hey Dad."
"It's so good to see you," Charlie looked behind Ana. "Where's your sister?"
Ana shrugged and leaned over to grab her suitcase that had rolled into the cruiser. "She was behind me at the doors."
Charlie huffed, but kept his eyes peeled for his other daughter. His shoulders were drawn tight through his coat. Ana could have written it off as him being cold, but she knew better.
When the twins were fourteen, Bella refused to go to Forks for the summer with their Dad. She insisted that if he wanted to see them, he should travel to Phoenix instead. Ana remembers this as one of their worst fights yet.
Eventually, when the twins nor their parents could reach an agreement, the matter was presented in court. The Judge declared Ana would go to Forks for two weeks and return to Phoenix two weeks before school was back in session, which was when Charlie could visit Bella.
Ana was happy with the ruling, but felt bad for her Dad. She knew those two weeks in Phoenix was almost all his vacation time for the year.
The courts ruling had done damage to Charlie and Bella's relationship, rendering them essentially strangers. Even when Charlie came to Phoenix, most of his time was still spent with Ana. Bella would have plans. At most, the three of them would have dinner together the day before Charlie flew home.
Going from almost no contact to full custody was going to be an adjustment for all three Swans.
Ana was loading her suitcases in the trunk when she heard Bella approaching. She ignored the words exchanged and continued throwing her duffel bag and backpack into the back. Ana circled the cruiser and climbed into the front seat, hoping that would spare any awkward conversation between Bella and their Dad.
Ana watched in the mirror as Charlie loaded Bella's bags alongside her own. Bella had left most of her belongings in Phoenix. She'd been reconstructing her wardrobe with Renée for weeks in preparation of Forks weather.
