Episode 2: The Road to Valor
Kael’s feet pounded the dirt path beneath him as he ventured farther from Astraea than he had ever gone before. The towering mountains of Valor's Crest loomed in the distance, their jagged peaks stretching into the clouds, marking the beginning of his journey. Every step felt heavier, the weight of his mentor Tarek’s words still echoing in his head.
“Find the Anima Masters. They can teach you what I cannot.”
The thought of leaving his village behind still gnawed at him, but the desire to become stronger pushed him forward. He couldn’t go back—not after what happened. Not until he could protect everyone.
As the path wound deeper into the forest, Kael felt a presence following him. At first, he chalked it up to nerves, but the sensation grew stronger, more palpable. The rustling of leaves, the faint crack of twigs… someone was watching.
He stopped, his hand tightening around the wooden hilt of his dagger. “Whoever you are, show yourself!”
Silence. For a moment, only the gentle wind responded, brushing through the trees.
Then, a figure emerged from the shadows of the trees. Clad in light armor with flowing dark hair, a girl around Kael’s age stepped into view. Her blue eyes gleamed with amusement, her stance confident, and a faint smirk tugged at her lips.
“So, you’re the one causing all that noise in Astraea?” she asked, her voice steady and sharp.
Kael narrowed his eyes, recognizing her from the rumors. “You’re… Raina Veloria. The princess.”
“Impressive. Didn’t think a villager would know me.” She crossed her arms. “What’s a boy from Astraea doing heading toward the Mountain of Valor? You don’t exactly look like a warrior.”
Kael scowled. “I don’t need to explain myself to you.”
Raina’s smirk widened. “Maybe not, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure it out. You’re heading to find the Anima Masters, aren’t you?”
Kael stiffened, but said nothing.
“I knew it,” she continued, taking a few steps closer. “But just so you know, you’re not the only one seeking their power. I’ve trained my whole life to stand among the greats of Valoria. You?” She looked him up and down. “You’re not ready.”
Kael clenched his fists. “That’s not for you to decide.”
Raina raised an eyebrow, then drew a sleek, silver blade from the sheath on her hip. “Maybe not. But I can test you.”
Before Kael could react, Raina lunged. The blade gleamed in the sunlight as it raced toward him. His instincts kicked in—he barely dodged to the side, feeling the sharp air slice past his cheek.
“Wha—hey!” Kael shouted, drawing his dagger in response.
“You’ll never survive the trials with those reflexes,” Raina said, her voice calm as she advanced again. “The Anima Masters don’t teach just anyone.”
Kael blocked her next strike, the clash of metal ringing through the trees. He could feel the force behind her blows—controlled, precise, nothing like the wild fighting style he had grown up with. Each strike pushed him back, forcing him on the defensive.
“You’re holding back,” she said, almost tauntingly. “Where’s the fire in your eyes from before?”
Kael gritted his teeth. She was right—he was holding back. Part of him didn’t want to fight her, a princess, a trained warrior. But another part—the part that wanted to become stronger—refused to back down.
With a sudden burst of energy, Kael shifted his stance and swung his dagger with renewed force. Raina’s eyes flashed with surprise as she blocked his attack, but this time, Kael didn’t let up. He pressed forward, forcing her to retreat slightly.
“I see you’ve got some fight in you after all,” Raina said, her smirk returning. She leaped back, creating some distance between them. “But this isn’t enough.”
Before Kael could respond, Raina held out her free hand, her fingers glowing with a faint blue light. In an instant, electricity crackled to life, dancing between her fingers.
Anima.
Kael’s eyes widened as Raina unleashed a burst of lightning toward him. He barely had time to dodge, the electricity scorching the ground where he had just stood.
“This is what you’re up against,” Raina said, her voice steady. “The power of an Anima warrior.”
Kael’s heart raced. He had heard of Anima users, those gifted with the ability to channel elemental forces. He had never seen it up close—not like this.
Raina stepped forward again, her blade crackling with energy. “Come on, Kael. Show me your true strength. Or are you just going to run?”
Kael’s grip tightened around his dagger. The gap between them felt insurmountable. He didn’t have Anima—he didn’t have the power she had. But he couldn’t back down. Not now.
His mind flashed back to the Specter in Astraea, the powerlessness he had felt in that moment.
No more.
Kael charged forward, his eyes locked on Raina. He swung his dagger with everything he had, aiming for her side. But just as his blade was about to make contact, a wall of electricity surged in front of him, knocking him back with a sharp jolt.
Kael hit the ground, his body aching from the impact. Raina stood over him, her blade still glowing with residual energy.
“You’ve got heart, I’ll give you that,” she said, sheathing her sword. “But heart alone won’t get you through the trials. You need power. Real power.”
Kael groaned, pushing himself up to his knees. He hated how right she was. He hated how far he still had to go.
Raina studied him for a moment, then sighed. “Look, you’re not completely hopeless. You’ve got potential… somewhere. But if you’re serious about making it to the Anima Masters, you’ll need more than just guts.”
Kael frowned. “Why do you care?”
“I don’t,” Raina said, shrugging. “But the road to the Mountain of Valor isn’t safe. The Specters are on the move. You’ll need someone to watch your back.”
“And you’re volunteering?” Kael asked, raising an eyebrow.
Raina smirked. “Think of it as an opportunity. I get to test myself against whatever comes our way, and you… well, you might learn a thing or two.”
Kael hesitated. Traveling with a princess wasn’t exactly what he had in mind, but… he couldn’t deny that having someone as strong as Raina by his side would help.
“Fine,” he said, standing up and brushing the dirt from his clothes. “But don’t think I’ll go easy on you.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Raina replied, her eyes gleaming with challenge.
And so, with an unlikely companion at his side, Kael took his first steps toward the Mountain of Valor. The road ahead was long, and the trials would be unforgiving. But for the first time since leaving Astraea, Kael felt a flicker of hope.
Whatever awaited him, he would face it head-on.
