The house felt like a fever dream. I've been so used to seeing them in states of disarray and decay that I had almost forgotten that people once lived in houses.
The Greene's house while humble in size was in just as good condition as the rest of the farm. Untouched by the world's harshness. I hadn't made it more than ten steps into the house before I was reminded that things were different now.
"Who might this be?" Rick stepped past me and into the kitchen where an older man was sat alongside a woman with brunette hair, a young boy and an older woman with curly blonde hair.
The room fell silent even Rick who looked at me with a leading expression and that's when I remembered, these people had no idea what my name even was.
"I'm Sam."
"This is Hershel, Patricia, my wife Lori and my son Carl." Rick quickly introduced the room but they still looked confused. "She found Sophia." Rick clarified and plenty of them had looks of relief.
Clearly they weren't aware of what had really happened.
"Is she—" Carl went to ask but was quickly stopped by Rick's statement. "She didn't make it." The room fell silent again and this time a heavy tension settled over them. Nobody quite to sure what to say.
I remembered how Sophia had spoken about Carl and his group and before I left I planned to let everyone know just what she had to say about them all. Especially her mother.
"Thank you for bringing the body back anyway. At least people can finally get some closure on the matter." Hershel said and everyone made noises of agreement except Shane, who had just stepped into the house behind me.
"If it's okay with you Hershel, I offered that Sam stay the night and get herself cleaned up."
"I believe she has more than earned that. I'll ask Maggie to get her some fresh clothes and after you have a wash, we'll see to any injuries you have."
"That's really not necessary." I tried to decline. All I wanted was the shower, anything else felt like too much.
"Good luck convincing Hershel different, consider yourself his hostage until he says otherwise." Rick joked as he clapped me on my shoulders, I did try not to flinch but it happened before I could stop it, I almost swung on him but I could see from the look on his face he knew his mistake instantly.
"I'm sorry, didn't mean to startle you." I waved off his apology before looking back toward Hershel who approached and offered to take my backpack.
