The basement was the same as always. Cold, dark and eerily quiet. The walls solid concrete and door to the basement solid steel, nothing beyond the hushed cries from a few women who were laid on their makeshift beds could be heard.
Then came the heavy footsteps and everyone in the room began trembling with fear. It started from above our heads and worked its way to the top of the basement stairs. The door creaked open and the god awful singing followed which was also the same each time he came for us.
"I know...you belong... to somebody new...but tonight you belong to me..."
He kept singing as he came closer throwing the lit cigarette he had in his mouth to the floor, stepping over those he had no interest in until finally he stopped. Right in front of me.
Whilst he kept on with his little song he grabbed me by my hair and dragged me towards the stairs but no matter how hard I fought, I was too malnourished and exhausted to do much.
He almost always chose me. In his own words I was his and he would have me. One way or another.

I jolted awake with a gasp and grasped the nearest thing I could use as a weapon, this time that came in the form of a bedside table lamp which had been long disconnected. I took a couple deep breaths to slow my rapidly beating heart and noticed it was since dark outside.
He can't hurt you anymore. He's dead.
Sleep hadn't come easy to me for a long time. No matter what I tried I would wake up just like I had and with the horrible unclean feeling. The type that made me want to crawl out of my own skin. I reached down to my backpack which was right beside the bed and pulled out a pair of battered Polaroid pictures, I looked down at one in particular.
One of me and the person who I held closest to my heart.
Emilia.
A small crash from downstairs made me jump completely out of the bed and I quickly pulled out the knife from my bag, grasping it tightly as I opened the door and made my way toward the source of the ruckus without making a sound.
I entered the kitchen only to find Hershel cleaning up some surgical tools he had dropped on the floor. I cleared my throat to alert him of my presence to which he looked up at me with a jump.
"I'm sorry if I woke you up. Have to keep these things as clean as possible just in case."
"You didn't wake me."
