"Surprise!" is the first word I hear as I open my eyes in the morning.  I pull the covers over my head, attempting to get a few more seconds of laying in bed. "Oh come on Ella! It's your birthday!", my best friend has other plans. I haven't mentioned but I live with a roommate which is now my best friend, we've been living together for 3 years so there's really no other way around it rather than just loving each other, even though sometimes we do get onto each others nerves.

I eat my breakfast in bed that she has made me and I listen to her go on about the list of guys she's done something with last night in the club. I always give her a slight nod or push her playfully whenever she mentions what she's done with each of them. This makes me question who I'm living with honestly, but I love her, at least she knows how to have fun.

After a while my mind focuses on other things, the guy I met last night at the club. I only have a slight memory of what he looked like and I honestly couldn't tell her for the life of me how I even interacted with him because I don't remember anything. I only remember that he was being quite a jerk, but that might've just been the alcohol controlling me and my thought process. "Oh and he had this black and gold belt on-" "What?" I interrupt her mid sentence. She pauses and looks at me like she's offended I had just stopped her 'descriptive speech', we sit there for a few seconds just looking at each other.  After that, she just returns a "What?" back. Now I just think about what to do, should I tell her or should I not? "Nothing, I just saw him." I decide not to. "Why did you look so shocked, obviously you saw him he was in the same club as all of us" she said, frowning with confusion all over her face. Suddenly she gasped and smiled, this meant she was onto me for finding him attractive, I quickly swallowed the tomato in my mouth. "Oh my god! Lumi, not at all, I'm surprised because I just think he's a jerk, he bumped into me last night and didn't even say sorry" I blurted out before she could make any more assumptions, I really wasn't in the mood for that. Even though what I blurted out was a complete lie, I was the one who bumped into him and my drunk self probably was the one that didn't apologise but who cared, I would never see this guy again - besides, she believed me.

I was on my way to pick up some groceries, I know it's my birthday but I find this way better than spending it with loads of people I probably wouldn't even like, how Lumi wanted us to spend it. Besides, all my family is in Europe and I'm in America, they can't be asked to travel that far just for my birthday, and I don't blame them, I don't come either.

I start picking out which peaches look the best to me, I probably look like a freak but some of these look like they've been dropped on the ground from the 5th floor of an apartment building, and I don't want to pay for those. "This one looks nice aswell." a male voice says, shoving an apple in front of my face. I turn to my left where the hand is reaching from and I recognise a familiar face. This guy has sunglasses on. Inside of a supermarket. I laugh. "You know that's an apple and not a peach, right?" I say with a smile on my face, something about this man makes me feel like I can ask him this instead of asking him any other proper questions. He nods and smiles back, he was already smiling but now his smile is wider, more genuine. "And you also realise you're in a supermarket ? There's no sun, so you don't need those sunglasses." I laugh. He takes them off and suddenly I stop laughing. Now he laughs, and I just stare at him. "Nicholas." he says, smiling with his lips pressed against each other as if he's embarrassed. My eyebrows raise and I suddenly remember every interaction I had with him last night. "Excuse me, are you stalking me?" I say in a concerned tone. His eyes widen. "Oh my god Nicholas! I'm just joking. Do you get scared this easily often?" I laugh yet again and this time it's genuine, so does he and that makes my smile even bigger. "I can't believe I thought you meant that. Sarcastic, I like it." he doesn't break eye contact for even a second while he says that last sentence, and something about that makes me feel warm, cared about. "I really did like you the other night though, you stood out to me the most out of anyone I've seen there. Even with how embarrassed you made me feel." he filled the awkward silence as I'd realised that I've just been staring at him for a while now with an awkward grin on my face. "I'm so sorry about that. I barely remember much, and I didn't even want to be in that club in the first place." I answered, I actually felt bad for some reason. I tied the plastic bag with the peaches in it and put it into my cart. "Yeah, you might have to make it up to me" he suddenly said after I turned away from him as I was organising my cart. I turned back to him and raised an eyebrow. "Can I take you somewhere? Now?"
