You sat in the passenger seat of Tenya’s car, your fingers nervously twisting together as you glanced out the window. The low hum of the engine filled the air, but it did little to calm the anxious energy bubbling inside you. Tenya’s hand rested on the gearshift, and every so often, his fingers brushed yours in a small, comforting gesture.
"You’re quiet," Tenya said softly, glancing over at you with concern. "Are you feeling alright?"
You turned to meet his gaze, trying to smile but knowing it probably looked a little strained. "I’m just nervous," you admitted, sighing. "I know we’ve talked about this and planned everything out, but… what if your parents don’t like me?"
Tenya’s eyes softened, and he reached over to take your hand in his, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "There’s no reason for them not to like you," he said, steady and confident. “They’ll see how wonderful you are, just like I do.”
His words brought a small smile to your lips, and you squeezed his hand in return. "I guess I’m just overthinking it."
"That’s normal," he said with a reassuring nod. "I was nervous before I met your parents too, remember?"
You laughed softly, recalling how Tenya had been so polite and formal during that meeting, trying his best to make a good impression. Your parents had found it endearing, and by the end of the evening, they were singing his praises.
Now, it was your turn to meet the Iida family—something that felt like a huge step, considering the weight Tenya placed on family and tradition. You knew how important this was to him, and you desperately wanted it to go well.
As Tenya pulled into the long driveway of his family’s estate, your heart skipped a beat. The large, elegant house loomed ahead, its grand architecture reflecting the prestige of the Iida family. You took a deep breath, trying to steady your nerves.
Tenya parked the car and turned to you with a calm, reassuring smile. "Ready?"
"As I’ll ever be," you replied, your strained smile confirming your sarcasm as you gave his hand one last squeeze before stepping out of the car.
Tenya walked around to meet you, his posture straight and confident as always. He placed a comforting hand on your back and guided you to the front door. Before you could knock, the door swung open, revealing Tenya’s older brother, Tensei, with a warm, welcoming smile.
"Tenya! And this must be the famous girlfriend we’ve been hearing about," Tensei said, his eyes lighting up with friendly curiosity as he stepped aside to let you both in.
You smiled, feeling a little less tense under his warm gaze. "It’s nice to finally meet you, Tensei. Tenya’s told me a lot about you."
"All good things, I hope," Tensei teased, shooting his younger brother a cheeky grin. "Come on in, everyone’s excited to meet you."
You stepped inside the large, elegant foyer, your eyes scanning the polished floors and pristine décor. Everything felt formal and refined, just like Tenya. But there was a warmth to the house as well.
As you followed Tensei into the living room, you were met with the sight of Tenya’s parents seated on the plush couches, their expressions calm yet kind. Tenya’s mother rose to greet you, her graceful demeanor immediately putting you at ease.
"You must be the wonderful girl we’ve heard so much about," she said with a gentle smile, taking your hand in hers. "It’s a pleasure to finally meet you."
"The pleasure is mine," you said, returning the smile and feeling some of the tension in your chest ease. Tenya’s father gave you a nod of acknowledgment, his gaze sharp yet respectful.
"Welcome to our home," he said, his deep voice steady. "We’ve been looking forward to meeting you."
Tenya stood beside you, his posture as impeccable as ever, but you could feel the subtle tension in his body. He wanted everything to go smoothly just as much as you did.
"Thank you for having me," you said politely, doing your best to stay composed. "I’ve heard so many wonderful things about your family."
Tenya’s mother smiled, gesturing for you to sit. "We’re glad to have you here. And please, make yourself comfortable. This is your home now as well, whenever you visit."
Her words were kind, and they helped you relax a little more as you took a seat beside Tenya. He subtly reached over, his hand resting on your knee in a comforting gesture beneath the table, hidden from view.
The conversation started slowly, with Tenya’s parents asking about your job and interests. You answered politely, doing your best to be engaging without feeling overwhelmed. Tenya chimed in occasionally, helping guide the conversation whenever he sensed you needed a moment to catch your breath.
After a while, the formal air began to fade, and the conversation flowed more naturally. Tensei, ever the extrovert, filled the room with his easy laughter, and Tenya’s mother shared stories of Tenya’s childhood that had you both blushing and laughing. Even Tenya’s father seemed to relax, his stern demeanor softening as he listened to the lighthearted banter.
At one point, Tensei leaned over with a grin. "So, how’s Tenya been as a boyfriend? He’s always been the serious type, but I bet he’s soft around you, huh?"
You chuckled, glancing at Tenya, whose face had turned a light shade of pink. "He’s a good balance of serious and sweet. He’s thoughtful, and I appreciate that."
Tenya’s mother smiled knowingly. "That sounds like our Tenya. He’s always been very focused, but we’re glad to see he’s found someone who brings out the softer side in him."
The rest of the evening passed in a blur of pleasant conversation and shared stories. By the time dessert was served, you felt like you were finally getting the hang of things, the nerves that had plagued you earlier melting away.
As you and Tenya prepared to leave, his parents stood to bid you farewell. His mother gave you a warm hug, and his father offered a firm handshake.
"We’re glad to have met you," his father said, his tone sincere. "You’re welcome here anytime."
As you walked back to the car, Tenya’s hand found yours, giving it a gentle squeeze. "You were amazing," he said quietly, his voice filled with pride.
You smiled up at him, feeling a wave of relief and happiness wash over you. "You think they liked me?"
"They more than liked you," Tenya said, his usual serious tone laced with warmth and reassurance, "And I’m incredibly lucky to have you."
