As I reached the precinct where Lee Jun Wei was being held, a wave of solitude washed over me. Without my assistant, Cindy, by my side, everything felt off-kilter. I realised I'd have to navigate this on my own, from documenting my client's account to handling all the necessary tasks alone.
I approached the entrance with a mix of apprehension and determination. The imposing building loomed before me, its walls seemingly imbued with the weight of the cases it held within. Taking a deep breath, I pushed open the heavy doors and stepped inside.
The atmosphere inside the precinct was tense, filled with the murmurs of officers going about their duties and the occasional sound of phones ringing off the hook. I made my way to the front desk, where a uniformed officer sat typing away at a computer.
The officer glanced up at me, eyeing me with a hint of scepticism. "Name and credentials, please," he requested, his tone curt.
I handed him the letter provided by Detective Kenny, along with my identification. He scrutinised the documents for a moment before nodding in acknowledgment.
"Follow me," he instructed, rising from his seat and leading me down a series of corridors. We passed through several security checkpoints before finally arriving at a set of heavy metal doors.
I nodded, steeling myself for the encounter ahead. With a deep breath, I pushed open the door and stepped inside.
Lee Jun Wei sat at a table in the centre of the room, his hands shackled to the surface in front of him. He looked up as I entered, his expression guarded.
"Mr. Lee," I greeted him, taking a seat opposite him. "My name is Kiyo Loo, and I've been assigned as your defence attorney."
Lee Jun Wei regarded me with a mixture of apprehension and resignation. "What do you want?" he asked, his voice devoid of emotion.
"I want to understand what happened," I replied honestly. "I want to hear your side of the story."
Lee Jun Wei's gaze flickered, betraying a hint of uncertainty. "Why bother?" he muttered bitterly. "Everyone's already made up their minds about me."
"It's irrelevant, Kiyo," Jun Wei asserted firmly. "If anyone were to challenge the Lee family, it certainly wouldn't be you. You, more than anyone, understand our formidable influence. When we decree that someone must perish, they do. There's nothing beyond our reach in Singapore, and even the police lack the authority to impede us."
Despite Jun Wei's confident words, I remained undeterred. "Perhaps you underestimate the power of justice," I countered calmly. "I've been working closely with Detective Kenny, the lead investigator on this case. Together, we're uncovering more secrets than you might imagine. We're confident that we'll unveil the truth behind these accusations."
Jun Wei's eyes widened slightly, a glimmer of doubt piercing his veneer of calm. "You're collaborating with Kenny?" he repeated incredulously, his voice tinged with disbelief. "He's among those who've consistently defied the trio families, stirring conflict. If I were you, I'd steer clear of him to avoid any complications."
Despite Jun Wei's warning about Detective Kenny's opposition to the trio families, I remained resolute in my alliance with him. "Detective Kenny may have his reasons," I replied evenly, "but I trust in his commitment to justice. We believe that by working together, we can uncover the truth and ensure a fair trial for you."
Jun Wei's expression hardened, but beneath the facade of indifference, I sensed a flicker of concern. "You're putting your faith in the wrong people," he warned, his voice laced with a subtle threat.
I met his gaze unwaveringly. "I believe in the truth, Mr. Lee," I asserted firmly. "And I'm determined to pursue it, no matter the obstacles."
"I must caution you, Kiyo Loo," Jun Wei declared. "Your name has been cropping up within my family ever since you won that seemingly impossible trial. If you continue to rack up victories, you may become a problem for us. The more influence you amass, the greater the need to eliminate you."
