"Mr Walker, what is the equation for a quadratic function, again?" Ms Edwards asked Jordan.

Jordan, like the rest of the class, had been slumped in their seats, daydreaming of what life would be like without the boring discomfort of maths. You couldn't blame us. Ms Edwards made the talk about the party you had last night sound like a recount of an Egyptian slave's day.

He awoke with a start. His snores had been resounding through the room.

"Mmm?" He asked, wiping drool off his face with the back of his hand.

Ms Edwards was losing her patience. She squinted through her dusty glasses at him. "Were you listening, Mr Walker?"

Jordan snorted. "Yeah, right. Who would want to listen to an old hag like you droning on and on about quantum physics, or something?"

See, Jordan has this thing that makes him oblivious to other people's feelings. Well, if you don't want to get hurt, it's best if you think that way.

"I was talking about quadratic functions, Mr Walker, not quantum physics! That is to be taught in the science classroom, not your maths classroom!"

You could almost see the steam coming out of her nostrils.

"Okay, okay. Calm your farm, lady," he reassured. "Um, let's see... would it be x = negative 'b' plus minus square root 'b' squared minus four-'a''c' over two-'a'?"

Ms Edwards stumbled back. "Class, is this the Jordan I know that leaves his homework until the period it is due to do, or have aliens mysteriously arrived and replaced Jordan with a clone?"

Snickering, the class looked at Jordan.

He shrugged.

"That may have happened," he paused, looking around at the class who had just gasped. "Or... Stella could've just passed me a note. I mean, c'mon, only Einstein knows this stuff!"

Kade laughed loudly.

With a tsk, tsk, Ms Edwards called out that Jordan and I needed to see her for a lunch detention.

"Mr Glore, I am under the understanding-" (Jordan coughed at this), "-that you are close friends with Mr Walker. Am I correct in assuming that?"

Hollis looked up nervously, stopping his pen which was drawing doodles on the back of his book. "Er, yes, Ms Edwards. You are correct."

Everyone rolled their eyes. Hollis was the only person in this room that Ms Edwards liked, because he was quiet, almost always paid attention (let's face it, even Hollis can't), always completed his work to a high standard and he spoke formally. He got that from attending his rich family's banquets and blah blah blah.

She continued. "Then how about you tell me about Einstein's theory he created for physics, since young Mr Walker here seems so interested in that particular subject? Go on, open your physics book."

Everybody's attention was now focused on Hollis now. He slowly opened his bag, got out his physics book, opened up to a particular chapter and started to read. But he kept his cool. Hollis always keeps his cool- even though the whole class was watching him and the teacher, for some reason, was actually smiling.

Jordan leaned closer to my desk. "Well, how about that? The old fish knows how to smile."

I had to stuff my fist in my mouth to stop myself giggling.
