As the warmth of John's kiss lingered on her lips, Anna felt a flutter of emotions inside her. She watched as he gathered his things, a mix of excitement and apprehension swirling within her. The clock on the wall ticked steadily, reminding her that time was fleeting.

"I think I need to go back now," John said, glancing at the time. "Your number?"

"Oh yes!" Anna giggled, reaching for his phone. She typed in her number with a sense of giddiness, feeling the thrill of sharing this small piece of her world with him.

As she handed the phone back, their eyes met, and for a brief moment, the air was charged with unspoken feelings. John's gaze held a mixture of affection and mischief, a playful glint that made her heart race.

"I'll text you," he said, his voice soft.

Before she could respond, he leaned in, kissing her gently, a sweet and lingering touch that sent butterflies fluttering in her stomach. It felt intimate, a promise that this was just the beginning of something beautiful.

"Just one more thing," he added, pulling back slightly, his expression teasing. "Don't follow me this time, okay?"

Anna laughed, rolling her eyes in mock annoyance. "As if I would do that!" she retorted, her heart warming at his playful banter.

"Good," he replied, a smirk on his lips. "See you soon, Anna." He leaned in again, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead, an affectionate gesture that sent a rush of warmth through her.

"Goodbye, John," she said, watching as he turned to leave. Each step he took felt like a bittersweet farewell, a reminder that this connection was still so new and yet so profound.

Once the door closed behind him, Anna leaned against it, a smile spreading across her face. The echoes of laughter and their playful moments replayed in her mind, filling her with a sense of joy and possibility.

But as the excitement of their time together began to settle, reality crept back in. She thought about Ben and the conversations they needed to have. The weight of that responsibility felt heavier now, contrasting sharply with the lightness John brought into her life.

Determined to focus on the moment, Anna decided to make the most of her evening. She tidied up the apartment, humming to herself, the lingering scent of their time together making the space feel alive with memories.

Later that night, as Anna lay in bed, her phone buzzed on the nightstand. She reached for it, heart fluttering with anticipation. The screen lit up with a message.

John: "Hi Anna, it's John."

A simple message, yet it made her smile like a teenager with a crush. She stared at the screen for a moment, her fingers hovering over the keyboard, wondering how to respond without sounding too eager.

Anna: "Hey, John. Thanks for letting me know who you are 😉"

She hit send and then immediately laughed at herself, feeling that familiar mix of nerves and excitement. She could practically see him smiling through the phone. It was amazing how they had only known each other for such a short time, yet everything felt so natural with him.

The response came quickly.

John: "I figured you might've forgotten me by now. Didn't want to take any chances."

Anna smiled to herself, her heart doing that little skip it always seemed to do when she thought of him. She leaned back against the pillows, thinking about the day they'd just had, from brunch with her family to that soft kiss goodbye. And now here they were, still connected through the glow of their screens.

Anna: "Forget you? Impossible. I'm still laughing about the 'don't follow me' comment. 😄"

She sent the message, feeling a lightness in her chest that hadn't been there in a while. John brought something out in her—an ease, a joy she hadn't realized she'd been missing. But as she smiled at her phone, a quiet thought crept in: Ben.

Her phone buzzed again, pulling her back to the moment.

John: "I'm glad you didn't take it too seriously 😂. I had a great time today. Your family's nice, though I'm still recovering from your dad's 'tough guy' act."

Anna grinned, remembering her dad's teasing remarks. Her fingers flew across the screen.

Anna: "Haha, yeah, he does that to everyone. You survived though, so that's a good sign."

There was a pause as she waited for his response, and in the silence, her thoughts wandered back to the situation with Ben. She had to tell him, soon. It wasn't fair to keep him in the dark, not after everything that had happened between her and John.

Her phone vibrated again.

John: "I don't know about 'survived,' but I definitely enjoyed it. You're lucky to have a family like that. So... when do I see you again?"

Anna's heart skipped a beat at his question. She wanted to see him again—wanted to lose herself in the feeling of being around him, the way he made her laugh, the way he made her feel seen. But she knew she had to face Ben first, before things went any further.

Anna: "I'd love to see you, John. But... I need to figure some things out first. About, well, everything."

She hesitated before hitting send, knowing it was the truth but still feeling the weight of the words. Would he understand? She stared at the screen, biting her lip, waiting for his reply.

A few minutes passed before the phone buzzed again.

John: "I get it, Anna. Take your time. I'll be here whenever you're ready."

Relief washed over her at his understanding. John didn't push or pry; he just gave her space, which only made her like him more. She felt a warmth in her chest as she typed her final message for the night.

Anna: "Thank you. I'll talk to you soon."

She set her phone down and sighed, her mind still buzzing from the day. She had to face the music with Ben, no matter how difficult it would be. But for now, just for tonight, she allowed herself to feel the happiness John had brought into her life, even if it was complicated.
