We pulled up to my cousin's beach front property in The Hampton's and I gawked at the beautiful house as if I was in some type of trance. She had moved out here about two years ago with her boyfriend of four who, like most men, was caught cheating on her with a girl she had met out here and mistakingly considered one of her friends. She found out about 5 months ago and proceeded to kicked him, along with his very cherished golf clubs, which are probably lying somewhere on the bottom of the ocean floor right now, rusting away. It's still hard not to laugh when I catch her telling the story to her snotty friends. Ivy was different though. With always being around money growing up, getting anything you desire, you would think she would be just like the rest of them, but she was always grounded and humble. She never saw her as above anyone and I've always admired her for it. We've always been close to each other ever since we were little. Being in a slump the past few months, given she had the reasons to be, and noticing the one I was in as well, she asked me to move in with her and who would I be to decline the offer?
She pinched my arm playfully snapping me from my thoughts.
"Ems, if you think the back is nice, you should see the front view." She teased, her smirk growing. My face lit up. Unbuckling our seat belts and slipping off our shoes, we hopped out the car sprinting for the ocean in front of us. I glanced back to see a confused moving truck driver, wondering what the hell we were doing.I felt the waves crash against my lower legs and I never felt so free and so serene.
"And to think you get to come home to this everyday after school." She added, I think assuming that that would add to it's glory, but the mention of school made me feel sick. I think she noticed the displeasing look on my face when she began speaking again. "Imogen, the schools are so much nicer here, so are the kids, it will be fun, stop worrying so much."
"You do realize you're barely 5 years older than me right? You don't get to refer to me as a "kid." I stated mockingly.
"I do sound kind of old when I say that.. Don't I?" She asked with a seemingly terrified expression on her face. We laughed and eventually decided we should head back and get my things situated into my new room.***
I woke up to a heavy weight plopped on top of me. "Ivy!" I groaned loudly. "It's too early for this, go back to bed."
"Did you forget that it's your first of school, already?" She snatched a pillow out from under me, throwing it right back at me. I rolled over pushing her off. Eventually she left and I got dressed and headed downstairs, grabbing my bag and the car keys.I pulled into a rather large parking lot, more students huddle around their fancy cars than near the school. Well, I probably would be too if I had even half of what their cars were worth. I walked around my car, over to the courtyard taking it all in, everything looked so pretty. I almost felt out of my element. Suddenly, a lot of the people standing around got oddly quiet, whispering amongst themselves. A group exited double doors following a girl and her friend. The girl was yelling at one of the boys behind her from what I could gather in the moment.
"Can you just tell me what the hell is going on?" A boy with spiked up dirty blonde, almost caramel colored hair with piercing brown eyes yelled to the girl in a hushed toned, rough voice. I don't think he appreciated a majority of the school in his business.
"Can you just leave me alone, Justin? You're so clingy." The pretty blonde, responded, irritated.
"Nah, I just wanna know why Becca was talking about your "pregnancy scare" if you weren't even in the Hampton's all summer?" The petite girl froze in her tracks at that comment. She spun around, slightly startled. He continued. "I just wanna know who you were fucking because it sure as hell wasn't me."
"Well clearly you weren't doing your job right, but I'm glad your best friend, Mike, could fill in for you. Literally. Grow an inch or four?" Her embarrassed expression quickly changed to a smirk as she looked him up and down tauntingly. I didn't realize how dramatic it really gets in the Hampton's, I figured it was all hype. She strutted off, throwing in the typical "we're over" and Justin hurried off looking pretty pissed.Something sparked within me, an idea, a pretty good one, I thought to myself. I refused to let this school do me how my last one did, I cringed at the thought. I quickly ran off to find Justin. At one of the awkwardly positioned corners of the building, I found Justin sitting up against the cold brick wall, scratching the back of his neck, lost into his phone. I cleared my throat to get his attention. He looked up at me, confused, probably more annoyed.
"Um hi, you don't know me, but if you're willing to hear me out, I have a proposition I think you might want to hear after that whole fiasco just went down." I stated confidently, working on the angle that he'd be too desperate to refuse my offer and want to redeem himself from embarrassment and humiliation.
He paused for a moment, he motioned for me to continue speaking, still confused.
"So here's the deal -"
