Sam's grandmother's shop stood nestled between a trendy boutique and a coffee shop at the far end of the mall, its large windows displaying elegant wedding dresses on one side and sharp-looking suits on the other. The bell above the door chimed as the group entered, and the soft sound of fabric swishing against hangers filled the space. It was the kind of place that exuded both charm and practicality—a perfect fit for what they needed.
Ben glanced around, impressed by the layout. One side of the store was dedicated to formal wear—racks upon racks of wedding gowns, tuxedos, and high-end suits. The other side had a more utilitarian feel, with sewing machines, spools of thread, and mannequins waiting to be dressed.
Sam's grandmother, Mrs. Wilson, looked up from the counter with a warm smile. She was an older woman with short silver hair and kind eyes, dressed in a simple yet elegant blouse. "Sammy! It's been too long. And you've brought friends!"
"Hey, Grandma," Sam said with a grin, running over to give her a hug. "Yeah, we're working on a project for school. We need to put together some costumes, and I told them your shop was the perfect place."
Mrs. Wilson laughed softly, her eyes twinkling. "Well, you've come to the right place. I've got everything you'll need. Now, let's see what you've got."
The group set down their bags, pulling out the various pieces they had gathered from the mall. Mrs. Wilson examined the assortment of clothing, boots, accessories, and props with a critical eye, nodding as they explained their ideas.
"A vampire, a witch, a werewolf, and monster hunters?" Mrs. Wilson said with a smile. "You've got yourselves quite the lineup."
"Yeah, we just need to figure out how to put it all together," Sam said, glancing at the pile of clothes. "And we might need a little tailoring help."
Mrs. Wilson waved a hand dismissively. "Oh, don't worry about that. We've got the sewing machines, and I can help with any adjustments you need. First, though, let's lay everything out and see what we're working with."
The group spread their costume pieces across the large table in the middle of the shop. Mrs. Wilson walked around, offering suggestions as they sorted through their things.
"Ben, those boots are perfect for a monster hunter," she said, nodding at the combat boots he had picked out earlier. "But you might want to add a few details to the jacket. Some patches or extra straps would give it a more rugged look."
Ben nodded, making a mental note. "Good idea. I was thinking about adding some kind of symbol or logo to the back—something that screams 'monster hunter.'"
"We can embroider that for you," Mrs. Wilson said. "Now, Tom, let's see that witch costume."
Tom held up the purple hat he had picked out, along with a flowing black coat. "It's not exactly traditional, but I think it'll work."
Mrs. Wilson chuckled. "I like it. Very modern. We could add some stars or moon symbols to the coat if you want to lean into the mystical side of it."
Tom's eyes lit up. "Yeah, that sounds awesome."
As they worked, Mrs. Wilson guided them through the process of modifying their costumes. She showed them how to use the sewing machines and helped them make minor adjustments to the fit of the clothing. Robin, who had a knack for sewing, was particularly focused as she added extra details to her monster hunter jacket.
"I didn't know you were this good with a needle and thread," Ethan said, watching as Robin worked on her costume.
Robin shrugged, not looking up from her work. "It's just something I picked up over the years. Comes in handy."
Mrs. Wilson smiled, clearly impressed. "You've got a good hand for this, Robin. If you ever need a job, I could use an extra pair of hands around here."
Robin gave a small smile but didn't respond, focused on finishing the last few stitches on her jacket.
Meanwhile, Sam and Flower were working on their vampire and werewolf costumes. Flower had found a pair of leather gloves that gave her costume an extra edge, while Sam was busy adding silver chains to her black boots.
"Are you sure you don't want to add some fake blood?" Flower teased as she watched Sam carefully attach the chains.
Sam blushed, glancing up at her. "No, I think I'm good without the blood. I don't want to go too over-the-top."
Flower smirked. "Fair enough. But you're definitely going to look the part."
Sam couldn't help but smile as she finished her boots. "Thanks. I can't wait to see how it all looks when we put everything together."
The group spent the next few hours assembling their costumes, each person adding their own creative touch. Mrs. Wilson floated between them, offering advice and help wherever needed. By the time they were finished, the shop was filled with laughter and the soft hum of sewing machines, the sense of camaraderie between the group stronger than ever.
Finally, as the sun began to set outside, they stood back to admire their work.
The costumes were nearly complete, each one reflecting the unique personality of the wearer while still fitting into the overall theme. Ben's monster hunter jacket was adorned with patches and symbols, giving it a tough, worn-in look. Tom's witch costume, with its flowing coat and starry embellishments, looked both modern and mystical. Sam's vampire ensemble was sleek and dark, with just the right amount of gothic flair, while Flower's werewolf costume had an understated elegance, complete with leather gloves and subtle wolf-like details. Ethan and Robin's monster hunter outfits looked rugged and practical, perfect for taking down any supernatural threats.
"You all look amazing," Mrs. Wilson said, clapping her hands together. "I'm so proud of you for pulling this together."
The group smiled, clearly proud of what they had accomplished. Tomorrow, they would finish the final details and make any last-minute adjustments. But for now, they were satisfied.
Sam hugged her grandmother tightly. "Thanks, Grandma. We couldn't have done this without you."
Mrs. Wilson chuckled. "Anytime, Sammy. Anytime."
As they packed up their costumes and prepared to head home, the excitement for Halloween began to build. They were ready—ready to show off their creations and make this Halloween one to remember.
