Kevin pov

Chase leaned back, shaking his head. "I can't believe your dad's doing this. You've always been the one running the company."

"I know," I said, frustration simmering. "It's like he's erasing everything I've accomplished."

Chase's expression turned thoughtful. "What's the plan now? You're really going to have a kid with some random woman?"

I shrugged. "I don't have a choice. Uncle found someone willing to carry the child. Kaylie, I think her name is."

"Kaylie," Chase repeated. "You don't even know her."

"No, I don't," I admitted. "But I have to secure my legacy. This company is mine."

Chase's eyes narrowed. "And what about Kaylie's feelings? Does she know the situation?"

"I don't know," I said, uneasy. "Uncle handled everything."

Chase's expression turned skeptical. "This feels off, man. You're sacrificing your freedom for the company."

I sighed. "What choice do I have?"

Chase leaned forward, his voice low. "Listen, Kevin, I get it. Family legacy, business, all that. But think about what you're sacrificing. Your freedom, your choices... you're tying yourself down to someone you don't even know."

"I know it's drastic," I admitted. "But I have to protect what's mine."

"Is it worth it?" Chase asked, his eyes searching. "You've always said you didn't want kids, didn't want the hassle. Now you're jumping into this... arrangement."

I hesitated, uncertainty creeping in. "I don't know, Chase. I really don't."

Chase's expression softened. "Maybe you should take a step back, think about what you truly want. Not just for the company, but for yourself."

I nodded, considering his words.

"I appreciate your concern, Chase," I said, my tone flat. "But I've made up my mind. This is business, not personal."

Chase raised an eyebrow. "You're really going to shut me out like that?"

I shrugged. "I'm doing what needs to be done. Emotions don't factor into this decision."

Chase sighed, shaking his head. "You're going to regret this, Kevin. You're sacrificing too much."

I stood, signaling the conversation was over. "I'll handle it, Chase. Don't worry about me."

As I walked away, I could feel Chase's eyes on me, but I didn't look back.

My phone buzzed, snapping me back to reality. I glanced at the screen – a text from Uncle, confirming the arrangement with Kaylie.

Memories flooded my mind, transporting me back to my childhood. Dad's constant criticism, Mom's silence. I learned early on to shut down, to protect myself.

Chase's words echoed in my mind: "You're sacrificing too much." But he didn't understand. Emotions only led to pain.

I recalled the last time I let someone in – Sarah, my high school sweetheart. She left without warning, taking my heart with her.

Since then, I built walls, fortified my defenses. Business became my solace, my focus.

Now, with Kaylie, I was taking a calculated risk. But emotions wouldn't cloud my judgment.

As I stood in my penthouse apartment, gazing out at the city skyline, my mask of confidence began to slip. The arrangement with Kaylie weighed heavily on my mind.

What was I doing? Was I truly prepared to become a father?

For a moment, I allowed myself to feel the uncertainty, the fear. But I quickly pushed it aside, reinforcing my defenses.

No room for weakness.

Yet, Chase's words lingered: "You're sacrificing too much."

I thought of Sarah, of the pain she left behind. Could I risk that again?

My phone buzzed, breaking the spell. Uncle's confirmation of the arrangement's details.

I took a deep breath, steeling myself.

This was business.

But as I turned away from the window, my eyes caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror.

For an instant, I saw a glimmer of vulnerability, of doubt.
