Jett sat, staring at Bumbles, who was now rummaging through her scattered collection of occult items, blissfully oblivious to her disappointment.
"You know, I really expected more from my first demon," she said, arms crossed, tapping her foot in frustration.
Bumbles paused, pulling out a sparkly crystal that caught the light. "Hey, it's not like I wanted to be this way! I mean, I didn't choose to be a trainee demon." It plopped the crystal back down, looking deflated. "The higher-ups have quotas and stuff."
"Quotas?" Jett raised an eyebrow. "You mean like a demon version of performance reviews?"
"Exactly!" Bumbles exclaimed, suddenly animated. "We're ranked on our ability to summon chaos and despair. If you summon someone who isn't high-ranking, it's not my fault!"
Jett sighed, the weight of her expectations crashing down like a heavy tome. "So, what can you actually do?"
Bumbles straightened its little spine, puffing out its chest. "Well, I can make things... inconvenient. You know, like making someone trip, or causing minor electrical failures—"
"I'm pretty sure I can just trip myself without your help," Jett interrupted, waving a hand dismissively.
"Okay, okay, but hear me out!" Bumbles continued, unfazed. "What if we teamed up? I can help you with your demonology stuff, and in return, I get to learn from the best! Think of it as an internship!"
Jett blinked at the demon, trying to gauge whether this was a good idea or just a recipe for disaster. "An internship?"
"Yeah! You show me how to be a real demon, and I'll... well, I'll just be me!" Bumbles flashed a goofy grin, its eyes sparkling with eagerness.
"Is that a selling point?" Jett raised an eyebrow. "You realise I'm not exactly the Demon Queen, right? I barely managed to summon you without screwing it up completely."
"Then we can learn together!" Bumbles insisted. "I promise I won't mess up *too* badly. Plus, it'll be fun! We can totally prank Adison."
Jett felt a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips despite herself. Adison always played it safe, and a little harmless chaos could be just what they needed. "You know what? Fine. We can work together. But I swear, if you turn my life into a complete disaster—"
"I promise I'll be good!" Bumbles interrupted, bouncing in place, a tiny ball of enthusiasm. "What do you want to do first?"
Jett thought for a moment, weighing her options. "Let's start simple. How about we prank Adison a little? Something that'll freak her out but won't destroy the apartment?"
"Okay, okay!" Bumbles nodded vigorously, wings fluttering with excitement. "How about... I can make her think the lights are flickering or maybe turn her phone into a potato?"
"Wait, what? A potato?" Jett asked, raising an eyebrow. "Like... actually a potato?"
"Yep! It's a classic," Bumbles said eagerly.
Jett chuckled, the tension in her shoulders easing a bit. "Alright, let's start with the flickering lights. We'll save the potato for later. Adison's phone is her lifeline, and I'm not getting involved in that war."
"Flickering it is!" Bumbles chirped, its face lighting up. "Stand back!" It closed its eyes and began to concentrate, small sparks of energy flickering at its fingertips.
Jett watched with curiosity, and just as Bumbles was getting into the groove, there was a loud *pop*, and the nearest light bulb exploded in a shower of sparks. "Oh no!" Bumbles squeaked, eyes wide. "That wasn't supposed to happen!"
Jett stared at the shattered bulb, her mouth agape. "Great, now I have to clean that up. You know, this isn't exactly what I meant by *flickering*."
Bumbles winced, a guilty expression crossing its face. "I was going for ambiance! You know, to set the mood?"
"Right. Mood lighting," Jett said dryly, shaking her head. "Let's maybe stick to a plan next time, okay?"
"Plan, right! Got it!" Bumbles nodded enthusiastically. "Next time, we'll totally nail it."
Jett took a deep breath, hoping that this demon internship wasn't going to turn her life into a continuous series of misadventures. "Let's try again. Maybe we can start with something a little less... explosive."
"Good idea!" Bumbles perked up. "What about making the fridge door open by itself? That's spooky, right?"
"Sure, as long as it doesn't scare the life out of her," Jett replied, still trying to keep a straight face. "Let's keep it simple, okay?"
"Okay! Here goes!" Bumbles concentrated again, and this time, Jett could almost see the tiny demon pulling at the invisible strings of reality.
Suddenly, the fridge door creaked open with an eerie slowness, just like a scene from a horror movie. Jett's heart raced, but she couldn't help feeling a rush of excitement. Maybe this whole demon thing wouldn't be such a disaster after all.
"Wow, that's actually kind of cool!" Jett exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with a mixture of excitement and disbelief.
Just then, Adison walked back into the room, her eyes widening at the sight of the fridge door slowly swinging open. "Um, Jett? Did you summon a ghost or something?"
Jett shot Bumbles a look, and the demon's eyes went wide with panic. "Uh-oh," it squeaked, wringing its tiny hands.
"Looks like our little prank worked too well," Jett muttered under her breath. "Time for damage control."
As Adison took a cautious step closer, Jett realized that maybe—just maybe—having an incompetent demon around wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. After all, life could always use a little more chaos.
