My seeth was not needed now as they had already spotted me. There was no outcropping on the plain sandy beach where I could veer and hide. They were four black shadows pursuing me and by the sound of the bowstrings I knew they would soon start firing arrows, I must zig zag to throw them off. I considered standing up and combating them but against these bulky men waiting for violence it would be foolishness. Also I had used up my magic that I was to use only once everyday.
Just as I was gaining speed an arrow wizzed close to my ankle, a trail of blood now flew in my wake. I tried my best not to limp as I ran for the fishermen's docking area. I could have lost one of the shooters but not two of them who were well trained enough to shoot without stopping, I glanced back and saw that the other two were carrying bulky swords but no arrows, thank the Lords.
The small fishing boats were only a few minutes away, I could smell the rotten fishy smells from them.
My maestro had made me run with weights tied to my legs and sometimes also on burning coal, so the ankle was not a big bother. I could have easily run to the boats but an arrow hit me just above my right hip, I couldn't help but stagger a step. I clutched my side and did not try to pull out the arrow fearing the blood loss.
I limped fast as I could to the boat closest to the coast, almost floating in the water. I threw myself into the boat and pulled out a dagger from my shoe. As I bent to cut the rope that tied the boat to the shore a shadow loomed over me. His bulky figure felt familiar but my vision had started to blur. Those arrows might be poisoned. He knew he had me. His eyes wrinkled at the corners and I thought he might be giving me a wicked smile behind the black cloth he had tied across his face.He kicked me hard on my sternum and the air wooshed out of my lungs. My eyes teared and the dagger fell from my hands.
I was lying on the boat's wall on my stomach. I looked behind him and his companions were few paces behind still. This was my last chance, I moved quick and pulled out an dagger tied near my thigh and stabbed the man right in his eye. He howled in pain and staggered bacha few steps. His men quickned their speed to reach him. I collected my dagger from the floor and slashed the rope.
The other men were now advancing towards me. I collected all my strength and moved the boat paddle with great push. The boat floated into the sea. I paddled and paddled till I could but before I got out of their range a few arrow fell on the boat. Just as I was about to get away an arrow pierced the area between my neck and shoulder. I hissed in pain but kept rowing.
I was soon too sluggy to continue working the paddle. I lay on the plank bench and looked at the wanning moon. I wondered who had hunted me down. Who had access to such trained men who could injure me so bad. The warm blood soaked my clothes and leaked on the boat's wood. I braved the pain and pulled out the arrow in my shoulder area. I let out a loud screech. I did not know if the men had followed me but I could feel that I would faint, before I could pull out the arrow lodged in my thigh. My last thought before the darkness claimed me was;
'Do all people who die at sea meet somewhere? Will I see my parents there?...'
