Let's Hang Out

We both turn to the entrance of the room, and Tyrone sighs with relief when he sees it's just Mrs. Laney.

She does seem a tad suspicious, though.

"I thought I heard some noise so I came to investigate." She explains her appearance. "Aren't you two supposed to be in class?" She then asks, leaning against the door frame.

"Technically, yes, but Khai was having a bad day so we skipped."

Mrs. Laney looks at me sympathetically.

"You're having a bad day?" She asks.

"Well, not anymore." I reply truthfully.

"Because we skipped class.." Tyrone clarifies quickly.

Mrs. Laney chuckles.

"Just... do attend your afternoon classes."

"We will." Tyrone tells her, and I nod enthusiastically, hoping to avoid getting into any trouble. Detention was so boring and I hope I never get it again.

Mrs. Laney smiles, then pushes away from the frame she had been leaning against and leaves.

Tyrone sighs again, then laughs.

"I'm so glad it wasn't Mr. Williams." I confess.

Tyrone and I are the first ones in the cafeteria, which makes sense seeing we didn't have to wait for dismissal. Once we get our food, which also doesn't take long because we're the only ones in line, we sit down at our favourite table, which is readily available for us because again, no one else is there yet.

We talk for a while, and the cafeteria slowly fills up.

Eventually, Aimee and Scarlette sit down with us. They don't seem to be with their other friends near as much anymore, I've come to notice.

"Where were you this morning, Khai?" Scarlette asks.

"Uhm... I skipped."

"Two classes?" She asks. Her eyes flit to Tyrone, and she smiles. "Is he being a bad influence to you?" She asks me.

"No, it wasn't like that, I just..." I can't think of a way to explain with putting myself in a vulnerable place. I don't know if I feel comfortable to talk to Scarlette about that kind of stuff yet.

"He was tired. It was my suggestion, though." Tyrone puts in.

Thank the stars for him. It's like he can just read me sometimes. There's literally no one who gets me like he does.

"Fair enough. I should do that sometime. Skip cause I'm tired and then just sleep." Scarlette says, but I can't quite tell if she's being serious.

"Hey Khai..." Scarlette catches up to me just as I'm about to enter civics class. "I was gonna ask you earlier but I never got around to it."

I look at her curiously.

"Umm... do you wanna hang out after school?" She asks.

I figure it's just a friendly offer. She knows I'm gay.

Well, I never directly told her, but she's a girl, and girls usually have excellent gaydar.

"I don't think I have any plans, so sure." I tell her.
