When the Wizarding War finally came to an end, rebuilding efforts immediately commenced. It was far from easy, and it took months to get things running smoothly again. Because the war left so much destruction and death, studies were postponed, at least until Hogwarts was rebuilt.
Seventh Years had been unable to finish their NEWTS and OWLS as most of them were on the frontlines during the final battle. It was decided they would be reinstated as eighth years, and would be given the chance to complete their final year. Of course, this was something deemed as optional. There was currently a high demand for employees so many students had no need to return.
Harry Potter for example, was offered a job as an auror immediately after the war by none other than Kingsley Shacklebolt. The boy had been eager to get away from tests and homework--as well as the hell that was living with the Dursleys and accepted without a second thought.
After the loss of his brother, Ronald Weasley opted to stay as close to his family as he could. As well as far from the place Fred Weasley took his last breath. He declined the offer to return to Hogwarts and joined George at Wizarding Wheezes. (He wasn't offered a position in the ministry like Harry was.)
Hermione Granger had without a doubt immediately accepted the offer to return. While she'd had several job offers--many were hoping to employ the brightest witch of her age due to her intelligence and valiant war efforts--she wanted to get her job the right way and felt there was still much she needed to learn.
Luckily it wasn't just her, a lot of other students she knew were planning on returning including:
Neville Longbottom, Hannah Abbot, Penelope Clearwater, Luna Lovegood, Lavender Brown, Dean Thomas, Seamus Finnegan, Padma Patil and Parvati Patil.
Unfortunately, her greatest headaches were also returning.
Any students who aided the death eaters in any way--whether willingly or coerced, were REQUIRED to return as a way of proving themselves. Being Minors during the war they had been pardoned, but they still needed to prove they weren't a threat. So they were to return to Hogwarts and complete their studies without any complications, where they would be under close watch by professors. This also included students related to Death Eaters or to someone who aided them.
Thus the mighty Slytherins were also returning.
Draco Malfoy, Blaise Zabini, Pansy Parkinson, Theodore Nott, Daphne Greengrass, Tracy Davis, Milicent Bulstrode, Astoria Greengrass and Evan Rosier.
It would be a pain to have to take classes with them again but seeing as she no longer had to keep Harry and Ron alive--she figured she could avoid them and stay in the library the entire year. At least as long as Ginny didn't drag her out...
When her letter from Hogwarts officially arrived, she'd been just a tad surprised to see she'd been made Head Girl. It was an honor she was quite proud to have, and luckily Ginny had been made a prefect as well! From the information she'd managed to gather she found out Neville was the male prefect for Gryffindor. Luna and Dean were prefects for Ravenclaw, Hannah Abbott and some other student were Hufflepuff prefects, as for Slytherin that was yet to be known.
Ginny had spent the entire summer boasting about her new position to Ron and Harry. She even took it upon herself to brag about Hermione's to Percy. Percy had been undaunted as he himself had been head boy, but he was impressed and praised Hermione for the accomplishment. Ron was rather cross, his own were never really noticed and his life seemed mundane in comparison to everyone else's.
This led to problems.
What had once been a blossoming romance between Ron and Hermione turned sour quickly with Ron's inferiority getting the best of him. He'd quickly turn to insults and scorn whenever he felt threatened. Hermione being the headstrong and confident witch she was never responded well and often fought back. She was also however weak for him and would let things go, dismissing his foul attitude as him still trying to get over his brother's death.
This didn't end well as eventually she caught him out on a date with none other than Lavender Brown. The witch had been just as shocked as Hermione to find out that Ron had been seeing them both at the same time. Lavender, who couldn't bring herself to leave Ron, eventually forgave him (dw she didn't forget.) Hermione however was not so merciful.
She'd immediately broken things off despite Ron's begging and exposed his deeds to his family. They'd all been furious to say the least. Molly had started sobbing and begging Hermione for forgiveness, she had only hugged her and said it was not her she needed to forgive. She loved the Weasleys like a second family and that would never change. Ginny had hexed her brother so badly he'd needed to be rushed to St Mungos. George had stood by watching coldly as she did.
The Weasleys still loved Ron, but their disappointment wasn't one they'd forget soon.
Harry too was trapped between disgust and the many years of friendship between him and the Ginger. Regardless he stood by Hermione and comforted her through the entire ordeal.
September 1st arriving had been a godsend, she could get away from everything and focus on what she loved most. Learning everything she possibly could. She'd missed out on a lot of the normal school life, and she hadn't realized how much she'd craved it. Every year without fail her life or someone else's had been threatened in some way, shape or form. All she could hope for was that this one would go by much smoother...
Nevertheless, she found herself nervous as she boarded the train alongside Ginny. As head girl she would have to direct the prefects, and she now had a bigger responsibility to uphold the rules. Rules which she had broken several of during her previous years. Not to mention she still didn't know who the head boy was. Apparently due to castle expansions Heads and Prefects would all be sharing one common room--each with their own individual dorm room. Hermione figured it was also an attempt at house unity and a way for the professors to keep an eye on whoever the Slytherin prefects were.
Taking a deep breath, she opened the door leading to the compartment where all the prefects would be meeting. It seemed a majority of them were already there--including to her dismay not two but three Slytherin students she recognized too quickly.
It seemed Slytherins prefects this year were Blaise Zabini and Daphne Greengrass.
The third Slytherin; the most obnoxious and infuriating blonde she'd ever met with the chilliest gray eyes--looked right at her with what looked to be between a scowl and a smirk. As if he were trying to decide whether he was upset or smug.
In the end it seemed he decided on smug. She had no doubt it was because of the shocked and clearly distraught expression she currently wore. She couldn't seem to take her eyes off the badge he wore on his robes--the same one she was.
"Bloody Hell." She blurted out before she could stop herself.
Draco Fucking Malfoy was head boy.
