Part 13: The Weight of the Crown

As their children grew, so too did the weight of responsibility that lay upon Harry and Victoria. With the passage of time came increasing expectations, not only for them as a royal couple but for their children—particularly Princess Astrid, who was already being groomed for her future role. Astrid was becoming more aware of her unique place in the world. At just eight years old, she was already the focus of public curiosity, her every move scrutinized by the media in both Sweden and the UK.

While Harry and Victoria had always aimed to raise their children with a sense of normalcy, they knew the day was fast approaching when Astrid would need to take on more formal responsibilities. The question of her future weighed heavily on their minds. Would she become a full-time Swedish royal, following in her mother’s footsteps as Crown Princess? Or would she find a unique role within the British royal family, blending the two royal traditions in her own way?

One evening, after a long day of royal engagements, Victoria found herself sitting alone in her study at Drottningholm Palace, surrounded by letters and reports. Harry entered quietly, sensing the tension in her shoulders.

“What’s on your mind?” he asked, taking a seat beside her.

Victoria sighed, rubbing her temples. “It’s Astrid. She’s getting older, Harry, and people are already speculating about her future. I don’t want her to feel trapped by all of this.”

Harry nodded, understanding the concern all too well. “I know. But she’s smart, and we’ve raised her to be strong. She’ll figure it out. We just have to give her the space to do it.”

Victoria smiled softly at his words. “I suppose you’re right. It’s just—there’s so much pressure on her already. I want her to have a childhood, to enjoy being young before the weight of royal duty becomes too much.”

Harry reached for her hand, squeezing it gently. “We’ll find a way. We always do.”

And they did. Over the next few years, they made conscious decisions to shield Astrid and Alfred from the overwhelming demands of public life. While Astrid began accompanying her mother on a few select royal engagements in Sweden, the focus remained on her education and personal development. She was allowed to pursue her interests—art, literature, and horseback riding—without the constant shadow of royal expectations.

Still, the royal couple could not completely shield their children from the world. As Crown Princess of Sweden and a member of the British royal family, Astrid’s destiny was already written in the public eye, and she would have to learn to navigate that reality. Victoria and Harry’s greatest hope was that she would do so with grace, strength, and a sense of purpose.

Meanwhile, Prince Alfred, younger and more carefree, remained blissfully unaware of the weight that his sister would one day carry. His playful nature and mischievous grin reminded Harry of his own younger years—before the full impact of royal life had settled upon him. Victoria, too, often remarked on how much Alfred resembled his father, both in looks and in spirit. And though he was second in line behind his sister, Alfred’s role in the family was no less important. Harry and Victoria were determined to raise him to be a supportive brother, just as Harry had always been to William.

As Astrid’s 10th birthday approached, the question of her future became more pressing. The Swedish public was eager to see the young princess take on more duties, and the British media speculated about how her dual heritage would play out. Would she spend more time in Sweden or the UK? Would she inherit both countries’ traditions or carve out her own unique path?

In a rare private family meeting, Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, and Queen Silvia joined Harry, Victoria, and their closest advisors to discuss Astrid’s future. It was a conversation that had been looming for some time, and the couple knew it was one they could no longer avoid.

“I understand your concerns,” King Carl said, his voice steady but kind. “Astrid will one day be a vital part of the Swedish monarchy. She must be prepared for the responsibilities that come with that.”

Victoria nodded, her face serious but calm. “I agree, Father. But we also need to consider that she has roots in both countries. Harry and I want her to be connected to both sides of her heritage.”

Harry, sitting beside Victoria, added, “Astrid’s role in the British royal family may be less defined, but it’s important. She can’t be fully Swedish or fully British—she has to be both. It’s who she is.”

Queen Silvia, who had always been a quiet but powerful influence in their lives, spoke softly. “Perhaps that’s where her strength will lie—in her ability to bring two worlds together.”

The room fell silent as everyone considered her words. It was a challenge, yes, but also an opportunity. Astrid, as the product of two royal houses, had the chance to shape the future in ways that no one else could. She could honor her Swedish roots while also embracing her British identity,
