I shifted my bag around nervously as I stood outside the front gates on my first day of middle school. Excited kids bustled past me, talking to each other. The sounds of their voices mixed together to form a loud, low warble. Shoes crunched on the gravel.
Awkwardly, I let out a sigh and hung my head, walking with the rest of the crowd. My long, silky hair hung long, covering my face. I picked up bits and pieces of conversation here and there.
"Ermahgerd! That top is so cute on you!"
"... And I beat the high score by 200!"
"So, yeah, that's how I lost my v-card these holidays."
As soon as I heard that I started spluttering. What? That girl was only 11 and she did what? What is society coming to these days?
Some tugged on my back mid-thought. I yelped, spinning around to face my attacker. Instead of some large bully, I found myself face to face to the familiar grin of my good buddy Andy.
"Dude, you gotta stop doing that," I laughed, punching him in the shoulder.
"Sure sure, whatever you say Mr Grumpy Pants." I glared at him while he grinned like a wild cat.
"So, how was the beach?" I asked him, kicking a pebble away as we sat in the quadrangle.
"Meh, it was okay. Nothing exciting, really."
"Nothing exciting?! You went on a two week holiday to a beach with glistening white sand, crystal blue water, and stayed in your own beach house! If that's not exciting, what is?!" I exasperated, throwing my arms around. Andy simply laughed, and his eyes glisten over as he stared into the sky thinking about something exciting. I waved my hand in front of his face. "Hello? Earth to Andy?"
"What? Oh, sorry. Just thinking." He blinked.
"Yeah, I noticed."
"Attention, all students. I'm Mr Munroe." We looked over to where a man stood above everyone with a microphone. "You at the back, please be quiet." Once everyone shut up, he continued. "It's great to see so many new faces!"
"Oh great, another one of these speeches," Andy whispered to me.
"I just know these next few years are going to be splendid, as long as you follow the rules." He cleared his throat and straightened his glasses while some students snickered. Wow some people were rude. I mean, yeah this guy was boring, and yeah school in general was boring, but they could at least be bored quietly. They could just think about how awesome their holidays were instead of irritating everyone else, and stop them from thinking of their own holidays. I mean, my holidays were pretty epic. I got to visit Andy before he went to the beach, and hang around the park listening to my music. Heck, I even learnt some new songs on my bass. My dad even brought up how I was getting really good and he was glad he put me in lessons. One day-
"Ashley," Andy hissed in my ear. I jumped and realised everyone was standing up.
"Uh... Did I miss something?" He facepalmed.
"You missed the entire thing. Do you even know what's happening first?" I stared at him blankly.
"Oh."
"Purdy," He sighed, "Purdy Purdy Purdy."
"What? Why are you using my last name?" I frowned.
"We're being organised into letters of last names. P for Purdy. You're over there," he pointed and I followed his hand. There were a group of people congregating around a teacher.
"And I suppose you're all the way over there in B," I pointed at the group furthest away from P.
"Uh, no mine's there..." I let out a sigh and a slight laugh.
