Pocketing my phone, I stepped into the front gates of my hell-hole of a high school. Today was the last day I had to be here. After that we were set free into the world.
I took long strides, feet patting soundly on the pavement. My hands were in the pocket of my favourite hoody, and I watched the ends of my doc martens scuff the ground.
My bag was nearly empty; there was almost no point in taking it on the last day, but my dad had insisted. "To hide things in," he had said with a wink.
Spotting an empty bench, I walked over and took a seat, zipping open my bag. I had expected only to see the slice of cake that had been packed earlier, but found that there was also a packet of condoms chucked in there. 'So that's what he was up to,' I thought, zipping it back up and pulling out my phone once more.
I was quite popular. Every few minutes I'd receive another text or call, and I always had people greeting me. I had to get to school early to avoid people. I could get almost any girl in the school, and out. But for someone so well known, I was lonely. For someone who knew everyone, I had no friends.
I ran my finger over the screen of my phone, watching it light up as I got yet another text but not replying. Most were trash; others didn't interest me. With a sigh I flipped it around in my hands.
"Ash!" I looked up to see the lead cheerleader, Hannah. She was tall, pale, and had long blonde hair. Her eyes sparkled as she skipped up to me.
"Hannah."
"Last day of school!" She shook her fists. "Then we're free! Free to party, free to do whatever!"
"Sure," I nodded. "Parties."
"You know basically everyone is having one tonight. What about you?"
I thought about it for a moment. I hadn't planned one, but it's not like that would stop me. "Is everyone expecting me to?"
"I don't know," she giggled, "but I'd sure love to come to one." I noticed the look of desire in her eye, and grinned back cheekily.
"Well then, what about it?" I whipped out my phone, sending one text to nearly the entire school. "See you there?"
"Oh, definitely!" She nodded vigorously, looking very sincere. "Toodles!" Waving her fingers, she skipped off again to find her friends.
"See ya, babe!"
I put the phone away. 'I need to get out of here before people find me,' I thought, rubbing the back of my neck. Today I wasn't feeling it. Searching through my bag again, I found an aspirin hiding in the bottom of one of the pockets and dug it out, popping it in my mouth and swallowing it without water.
Kicking around the dirt, I had a sudden unexplained feeling of nostalgia for this place. I had no idea why; as I have said before, this place was pretty much just a hell-hole.
"Ashley," grunted a tough sounding voice from behind me. I turned around to see Josh.
"What up, man?" I stood and faced him.
"So your party tonight?"
"Yeah?"
"Who's coming?"
I shrugged. "I dunno; anyone really."
"So I can bring people?" He asked.
"Why, got some chick in mind?" I winked at him.
"You know I'm your best wing man!" He lifted his arms and I laughed.
"Yeah right, in your dreams! I don't need anyone to get a girl. I'm you're wingman!" I poked him in the chest.
