Mumbai's monsoon was a symphony of nature, with raindrops dancing like silver pearls against the backdrop of dark clouds. The air was filled with the earthy aroma of wet soil, and the rhythmic sound of rain tapping against the glass resonated through the bustling city.

In a random ward of the opulent Suryodaya Hospital, known for its world-class facilities and luxurious ambiance, Y/N, a dedicated doctor, found solace in this chaotic city. She sat by the window, her gaze fixed on the rain-soaked streets. With each droplet that splashed against the glass, she absentmindedly tapped her fingers, creating a melody of her own. Just then, a soft voice interrupted her reverie.

"Beta, main kab theek ho jaungi?" a frail voice asked from the bed beside her.

Y/N turned to see Mrs. D'Souza, a long-term patient who had become more like family. Her frail hands were reaching out as if she was calling her own daughter. Y/N immediately got up and walked over to her, gently holding her hand.

"Bas kuch din aur. Aap ko jaldi hi ghar bhejne ka intezam karenge Suzanna Aunty ," Y/N reassured, her voice calm and comforting.

She smiled weakly, her eyes twinkling despite the illness. "Tumhari baatein sun kar lagta hai, main abhi chal kar ghar chali jaungi."

Y/N chuckled softly. "Aapko aisa lagna bhi chahiye . Ab aap zyada stress mat lena, main sab handle kar lungi.

She stood up, adjusting the woman’s blanket and making sure she was comfortable. Just as Y/N turned to leave, the woman’s voice stopped her again.

Mrs. D'Souza squeezed her hand, her eyes soft. "Tum meri beti ho toh main jaldi se theek ho jaungi, dekh lena... you're a Angel Sweetheart.."

Before Y/N could respond, a nurse approached her with a gentle reminder. "Y/N, Dr. Mehra ne apko unke cabin mei bulaya hai."

Y/N nodded“Acha, main aa rahi hoon!” she replied, a smile briefly flickering across her face.

"Mai chalti hu aunty" She gave Mrs D'Souza one last smile before heading out of the room.

"Han beta.." That was all she could say in her thin voice.

As she walked down the corridor, her mind was still with the elderly woman. Moments like these, where she could bring comfort to her patients, were what made her love her job.

The rain continued to fall, but Y/N's heart was light, feeling a sense of purpose amidst the storm. The world outside may have been drenched, but inside her, a fire burned brightly, ready to make a difference in the lives of her patients.

I hurried towards Dr. Mehra's as per his instructions, now there is no time to be mesmerized by the rain before saving a human life as it is doctor's main duty.

As soon as I opened the door of the cabin, I saw Dr. Mehra who was adjusting his glasses while looking at some files.

"Aapne bulaya Dr. Mehra?!!" I asked, peeking through the door and tilting my head.

He pulled his face out of the files and looked at me.

"oh Y/N.. accha hua tum aa gayi.." He placed the file on the table and stood near the window, I followed him there.

"Look, I want to be very clear and straight forward about this.." he took a deep breath before starting.

I stood next to Dr. Mehra, her heart racing as i sensed the seriousness of the conversation. The rhythmic sound of the rain outside seemed to echo the urgency of the moment.

"Koi serious case hai kya sir? kya aap mujhe specific details bata sakte hain?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.

Dr. Mehra sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Haan, Aisa hi kuch.. to suno. Hamara hospital Mumbai ke sabse profitable hospitals me se ek hai you know right!...aur iski funding ka ek bada hissa Malhan Enterprise se aata hai."

I kept nodding as I knew everything he was talking about.

He continued "to waha ke malik ka ek beta hai..4 saal ka, he's suffering from Atrial Septal Defect.."

I felt a knot form in my stomach. “Magar yeh to ek high-risk surgery hogi. Mujhe nahi pata main…”

“Y/N, meri baat suno,” Dr. Mehra interrupted gently, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “Tumhe yaad hai wo case, jab ek 92 saal ke aadmi ko tumne bacha liya tha, jab sab log haar maan chuke the? Tumhari skills ne uski zindagi badal di. Agar koi yeh surgery kar sakta hai, to woh tum ho.”

I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of his words settle over me. “Okay, main koshish karungi. Lekin mujhe is case ki details aur reports chahiye hongi, taaki main achhe se tayyari kar sakun.”

"Bilkul, main tumhe sab kuch provide kar dunga,” he assured. “Ab jaldi se taiyar ho jao.”

As I turned to leave, the rain outside intensified, but within myself, a new resolve took root. The chaos of the storm mirrored the urgency of my mission, and I felt a spark of determination ignite in my heart.

...

"Mujhe nahi pata yaar mai kaise yesab handle karne waali hu!" I stood up, setting my coffee cup to the side.

"Areh you're one of the well known cardiologists in Mumbai..tera confidence aur BP har waqt low rahega to kaise chalega?!!" The girl sitting beside me, said to instill courage in my timid mind.

"Not that anu!" I turned around "Maine uski reports study ki.. the boy is just 4.. itne chhoti umar mein aisi surgery hona makes it extremely high-risk because his body might not be able to handle the stress..especially his underdeveloped immune system.... Second, he’s developed pulmonary hypertension, meaning the pressure in his lungs is dangerously high due to blood flowing the wrong way for too long. Agar surgery ke time kuch galat hogaya toh... Uska heart ya fir lungs fail kar sakta hai."

Anoushka also came up and stood beside me
"But Mr. Malhan ne final kar diya hai.. wo Shubh ki Surgery tum logon ke hospital se hi karwane waale hai!... And you know nah about the funding and all.. hospital ki izzat ka sawaal hai!!" She gave me courage by putting her hand on my shoulder "I know tu kar legi!"

I felt the weight of her words settle in my mind, a mix of responsibility and pressure swirling within me. "Mujhe pata hai Anu, par yeh sirf hospital ki izzat nahi hai. Yeh ek chhote bacche ki zindagi hai," I replied, my voice wavering slightly.

Anoushka nodded, her eyes filled with empathy. "Main samajhti hoon, lekin agar koi isse sambhal sakta hai, toh woh tum ho. Tumhara experience, tumhara determination... yeh sab kuch is case mein bahut maayne rakhta hai."

I took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm brewing inside me. "Acha, main is par focus karne wali hoon. Mujhe procedure ka detailed plan chahiye. Pehle toh mujhe surgery ki details ko samajhna hoga, taaki main uske liye best strategy bana sakun."

"Bilkul! Main tumhe har information laake dungi" Anoushka said, squeezing my shoulder reassuringly. "Aur yeh mat bhoolo,Tumne kabhi bhi kisi bhi challenge se kabhi nahi hara hai!"

Just then, the heavy rain seemed to ease, as if it sensed the shift in my resolve. I looked out of the window at the droplets cascading down the glass, reflecting the changing light—a reminder that even the storm would pass.

With a newfound determination, I stood taller. "Theek hai, main is challenge ko accept karti hoon. Shubh ke liye kuch bhi karne ko tayaar hoon."

As we headed back to our house, I could feel the rhythm of the rain echoing my heart—a steady beat urging me forward. I was ready to face whatever lay ahead, not just for the sake of the hospital's reputation, but for the innocent life that depended on my skills.

The chaos outside was mirrored by the chaos within, but I welcomed it. I was a doctor, and this was my calling.
