The sun was barely peeking over the horizon as Alex paced in his office, his mind racing with a mix of emotions he hadn’t felt in years. It was a quiet morning, the city still asleep, and the solitude of the early hour only magnified the weight of the decision he was about to make.

Alex had always prided himself on being in control—of his company, his decisions, his emotions. But ever since Emme Carter had stormed into his life, demanding he save her small business and, in doing so, challenging his carefully constructed walls, control was slipping through his fingers.

The kiss from the night they spent together haunted him. Not because he regretted it—no, it was because he couldn't stop thinking about it. His cold exterior had cracked, and despite every effort to patch it back up, Emme’s warmth had seeped through the cracks, thawing a part of him he thought he’d buried long ago.

But what terrified him most wasn’t that he felt something for her—it was that he had no idea how to handle it.

He’d tried pushing her away. He’d tried reminding himself that people like his father always left, that love was just another way to get hurt. But none of it worked. Every time he looked at her, every time she smiled or laughed, he felt that familiar tightening in his chest. That inexplicable longing for something more.

The truth was, Alex had never felt anything this intense for anyone before. And now, after years of shutting himself off from emotion, he was standing on the edge of a cliff, terrified to take the plunge.

But he couldn’t deny it any longer. He had to tell her.

With a deep breath, Alex grabbed his jacket and walked out of his office. His heart pounded as he made his way to Emme’s apartment, where he knew she would be getting ready for her day. His mind replayed the moments they had shared, each one bringing him closer to a realization he had fought for too long.

By the time he reached her door, his nerves were shot. For a man who had mastered the art of negotiations and boardroom battles, confessing his feelings felt like the hardest thing he’d ever have to do.

He knocked, and after a few moments, Emme opened the door, looking surprised to see him so early. She was still in her casual morning clothes, her hair slightly tousled, but she looked as beautiful as ever.

“Alex?” she asked, her brow furrowed. “What are you doing here?”

“I need to talk to you,” he said, his voice sounding more strained than he had intended. He stepped inside, and Emme closed the door behind him, sensing that something serious was on his mind.

They stood in her cozy living room, and for a moment, Alex was at a loss for words. He had rehearsed this in his head a hundred times on the way over, but now, standing in front of her, every carefully thought-out sentence seemed to vanish.

“Alex?” Emme said softly, stepping closer to him. “What’s going on? You look… tense.”

He let out a shaky breath, running a hand through his hair. “I’ve been thinking… a lot about everything. About us.”

Emme’s eyes widened slightly, and she crossed her arms, waiting for him to continue.
“Okay…”

He swallowed hard, his throat dry. “I need to tell you something, and I honestly don’t know how you’re going to take it.”

Emme stayed silent, her eyes never leaving his, and that only made it harder for him to continue. He had faced hostile takeovers and cutthroat deals, but this—this was uncharted territory.

“I’ve been cold,” Alex started, his voice barely above a whisper. “Distant. And it wasn’t fair to you. I’ve pushed you away, and I’ve been trying so hard to keep my distance because… because I’m scared.”

Emme’s expression softened, and she took a step toward him. “Scared of what?

“Of you,” he admitted, his heart hammering in his chest. “Of what I feel for you. I’ve spent my whole life building walls, making sure no one could get close enough to hurt me the way my father hurt my mother. But then you showed up, and you’ve been… relentless.”

A small smile tugged at the corners of Emme’s lips, but she said nothing, letting him continue.

“You’ve been kind, warm, and you made me feel things I wasn’t ready to feel,” Alex went on, his voice cracking slightly. “I tried to deny it. Tried to convince myself that I didn’t care, that it didn’t matter. But it does, Emme. You matter.”

He looked down, his chest tight with the weight of his emotions. “I’ve fallen for you, and it terrifies me. I don’t know how to do this. I don’t know how to let someone in. But I can’t keep pretending I don’t feel anything.”

Emme’s eyes filled with emotion as she stepped closer, placing a hand on his arm. “Alex…”

“I love you,” he said, finally letting the words fall from his lips. “I love you, but I don’t know how to be the man you deserve. I’ve never done this before, and I’m afraid I’ll screw it up.”

Emme’s heart ached as she listened to his vulnerable confession. She had always known that Alex’s cold demeanor hid something deeper, something fragile. And now, hearing him admit to his feelings, she understood just how much pain he had been carrying with him all these years.

“Alex,” she said softly, reaching up to cup his face with her hand. “You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to have it all figured out. All I want is for you to be honest with me. To trust me.”

He closed his eyes, leaning into her touch. “I’m trying.”

“I know you are,” she whispered. “And I love you for it.”

His eyes flew open, and he stared at her in disbelief. “You… love me?”

Emme smiled, tears glistening in her eyes. “Of course, I do. You drive me crazy, but I see the man underneath all that armor. The man who cares deeply, even if he’s scared to show it.”

Alex felt a wave of relief wash over him, but the fear was still there, lingering in the back of his mind. “What if I hurt you? What if I push you away again?”

“We’ll figure it out together,” Emme said gently, brushing her thumb across his cheek. “You don’t have to be perfect, Alex. Just be yourself. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

For the first time in years, Alex allowed himself to believe in the possibility of happiness. He didn’t know what the future held, but standing here with Emme, he felt something he hadn’t felt in a long time—hope.

He leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers, their breaths mingling in the quiet room. “I don’t deserve you,” he whispered.

Emme smiled, pulling him closer. “That’s not for you to decide.”

And in that moment, with the weight of his past still heavy on his shoulders but the warmth of Emme’s love surrounding him, Alex realized that maybe—just maybe—he could learn to let her in.
