I prefer him over Mal in the books because he at least cared a bit about the bullied people. And he's so funny in the second book. And, yes, I have to mention this, his growing friendship with Carlos! And he was also funny in the first movie. Or his flirting with Harry and Gil. I mean "I can feel ya looking" "Good". Uhm hello?! He definitely had a thing for him and so did Harry. His relationship with Lonnie... Sorry. And he even canonically travelled around the world with Gil. Not with Lonnie.
