Marita walked briskly down the bustling street, her heart pounding in her chest, each step a reminder of the encounter she had just fled. Elias’s face lingered in her mind like an unwelcome ghost, stirring emotions she thought she had buried. The city was alive around her, but all she felt was the chilling echo of betrayal that resonated deep within her.

She needed to clear her mind. The aroma of fresh pastries wafted from a nearby bakery, drawing her in. She stepped inside, seeking solace in the warmth and comfort of the place. The gentle hum of conversation and the clatter of dishes created a cocoon that felt momentarily safe.

Ordering a coffee and a slice of cake, Marita settled at a small table by the window, hoping the sweet taste would distract her from the turmoil inside. But instead, her thoughts spiraled back to Elias. Why did he have to be here? Why did fate insist on intertwining their paths again?

Her mind raced with memories of their time together in her past life. The stolen moments in shadowy corners, the laughter shared beneath the moonlight, and the promises whispered in secrecy. Those memories felt tainted now, marred by the violence of their ending. She couldn't allow herself to forget how he had betrayed her in the most horrific way imaginable.

As she sipped her coffee, she spotted a newspaper on the table next to her. Its headline read: “Mysterious Murders Plague City; Investigators Stumped.” A chill ran down her spine as she scanned the article, its contents igniting a flicker of curiosity and unease. The descriptions were eerily familiar: bodies found with signs of struggle, a distinct pattern that seemed almost deliberate.

Could this be connected to her past life? The thought unsettled her. Was someone else trying to settle old scores?

Marita’s fingers tightened around her coffee cup as she recalled the final moments of her life—the darkness closing in, the betrayal, the blood. She couldn’t shake the feeling that this was more than coincidence. There was a connection, and she needed to uncover it.

After finishing her slice of cake, Marita rose, her mind set. She had to take control of her life. Finding the answers was her only path to peace.

Later That Evening

Returning home, Marita felt the weight of her thoughts pressing down on her. She had a plan. First, she would need information. The city held secrets, and she intended to uncover them.

Flipping through her phone, she remembered Emma, her loyal maid from her past life who had been more like a sister. In this new life, Emma had become her confidante and friend, the one person she could trust. If anyone could help her, it was Emma.

Marita dialed Emma’s number, her heart racing with anticipation.

“Hey, Marita!” Emma’s cheerful voice greeted her. “How was your day?”

“Emma, I need to talk to you about something important. Can you come over?”

“Of course! I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

Marita hung up, a mixture of relief and urgency flooding through her. Emma would understand; she always did.

When Emma Arrives

Moments later, a knock on the door signaled Emma’s arrival. Marita opened the door to find her friend with a bright smile, carrying a small bag of snacks.

“Thought I’d bring you some treats! What’s got you looking so serious?” Emma asked, stepping inside and setting the snacks on the table.

“I ran into someone today,” Marita said, trying to keep her voice steady.

Emma’s expression shifted instantly, curiosity lighting up her eyes. “Who? Is it someone from your past?”

Marita hesitated, her heart racing at the thought of revealing Elias. “It’s Elias,” she finally said, watching Emma’s reaction closely.

“Elias?” Emma echoed, her brows furrowing. “The one who…?”

“Yes,” Marita interrupted, feeling the weight of her words. “He’s back. He’s here in this life.”

Emma’s expression turned serious, her eyes searching Marita’s. “What did he say?”

“He tried to apologize,” Marita replied, bitterness creeping into her tone. “He said he never wanted to hurt me. But how can I trust him after what happened?”

Emma nodded thoughtfully. “It’s understandable that you feel that way. But you need to ask yourself—do you want answers? Do you want closure?”

Marita took a deep breath, the tension in her chest loosening slightly. “That’s why I called you. I need to know why he killed me in my past life. There’s something deeper here, Emma. I felt it today—there’s a connection to those murders in the news.”

Emma’s eyes widened. “Murders? What do you mean?”

“There’s a pattern,” Marita explained, her mind racing. “I think it might be related to us, to what happened between me and Elias. If I can figure out the truth, maybe I can finally let go of the past.”

Emma leaned forward, her voice filled with determination. “Then let’s find out. We’ll dig into this together.”

Marita felt a spark of hope igniting within her. With Emma by her side, she was ready to confront her past, to uncover the truth behind the shadows that haunted her.

Setting the Plan in Motion

As night settled over the city, Marita and Emma began to strategize. They would gather information about the murders, delve into the history that connected them, and confront the ghosts of their pasts.

For the first time in a long while, Marita felt a sense of purpose. She wouldn’t shy away from the truth, no matter how painful it might be. It was time to reclaim her life and seek justice for the betrayal that had cost her everything.
