Chapter 2
Holly
It's been an adjustment of major proportions for us. We went from living in a small apartment, just Tempy and me, to living with Easton, now living in this massive mansion on the cliffs, with people constantly in and out of here. I'm trying to get used to it.
I can do the work. I don't mind hard work and I'm willing to carry my weight and then some to pay the Bradford's back for their generosity. I'm just not used to how many people are around all the time. This family is huge and that doesn't include the team and staff that have arrived.
They are up early every day. All of the players are in the gym first thing with Bradford. Blake works them all hard. Not one complains. None. They are grateful for the opportunity to play with the Bradford's. An incredible opportunity that was not open to just anyone. I should know, I was given just as rare of an opportunity.
Once the team has eaten breakfast they are out to the field and practicing for the upcoming season. They have a lot of catching up to do to be ready for the first game of the football season. I look forward to watching them on television on Sundays.
And when they disappear that's when I get to work. Starting in the kitchen this morning, I get the dishwashers, two of them, loaded and started before I scrub down the countertops and appliances until everything shines. Then I move on.
Heading to the living room, I vacuum, dust, straighten up magazines, and put things away. Collecting glasses, plates, water bottles and sweated in socks as I go. Dumping the dishes in the sink, I toss the recycling in the bin and leave the socks in the laundry room for later.
As I come back out to the kitchen, I stop fast seeing Bradford standing in front of the open refrigerator in only a pair of boxers. I'm not usually shaken up by a man's presence. I've seen Easton walk around in his underwear all the time when I worked for him. This is different.
There's something about Bradford that says "off limits". He has an air of power, of confidence, that I don't have. He makes me nervous and I feel like a total klutz around him.
Wiping my hands on my jeans, I hope I can get through the next ten minutes without hyperventilating. Then he turns his head and looks over his shoulder at me. Oh boy. My hands started sweating again and my mouth went dry. He is definitely gorgeous.
"Can I get you something?" I asked, getting up enough nerve to finally speak.
"I can fix my own breakfast. You don't have to wait on me." He growled without looking at me.
I get the distinct impression he doesn't like me.
"That's my job, Mr. Drake." I respond but he doesn't acknowledge it.
Understanding that I'm not wanted or needed, I turn around to go back to my work when he finally says something.
"Why are you here?" Turning around, Bradford glares at me like I've done something wrong. "You are capable of doing something else with your life besides cleaning up after other people. You're a smart person, Holly. So why are you doing this?"
It was a simple answer. "Easton was good to me at a time when I was at my lowest. I owe him a lot. I like Lowe and I respect what she's trying to do. Your entire family has been great to us. I can never repay that but I can be here to help them succeed."
He didn't say a word but looked me over, head to toe, as if I was a science project he couldn't figure out. It was uncomfortable to know that the man who owns this house doesn't want us here. I'm employed by Lowe and if she decides that she doesn't want me then I'll figure something else out. Until then, Bradford Drake will have to deal with me.
