It was after school, and I was walking around by parking lot on campus while I waited for my mom to fetch me. She said she would be a bit late due to traffic and whatever.

While I am roaming around, I hear a girl shouting out a name, I think she was saying Àlvaro. Im not 100% sure. She was waving her arms out the window, trying to get a boys attention, but he couldn't hear her.

Do I tell him or leave it? The girl looks like she's in a rush, and he's just standing. Okay, let me go.

I hesitated for a moment, but I had to say something. I took a deep breath and walked up behind him, tapping him lightly on the shoulder. He turned around, and for a second, I thought he might not have noticed me, but then he looked down, took out his AirPods, and raised an eyebrow. A half-smile played on his lips.

“What’s up?” he asked, his voice casual, like this was nothing out of the ordinary.

I could feel my heart racing, and for a second, I couldn’t meet his eyes. Why did I feel so nervous? I cleared my throat, trying to shake off the awkwardness. "Um... there is someone who keeps calling out for you across the parking lot."

He looked past me, and I quickly pointed in the direction of the girl leaning halfway out of the car window, waving frantically. His sister, I guessed.

"Perra loca," he muttered under his breath, and I had no idea what that meant, but it didn’t sound flattering.

I bit my lip, feeling a little self-conscious as he turned his attention back to me. I clutched my books tighter to my chest, unsure what to do with my hands, or with myself.

I didn’t even know why I was so anxious talking to him. Maybe it was the way he looked—like he didn’t care about much, like nothing fazed him.

"Right," he muttered, shoving his hands into his pockets. There was something about the way he said it, a hint of impatience, like he had better things to do than to get in a car with her. "Thanks."

I nodded quickly, taking a step back. Should I leave? Stay? Before I could figure it out, he added, "Later," and walked off, heading toward the girl in the car.

I watched him for a moment as he muttered something under his breath in Spanish. I didn't catch all of it, but the frustration was clear in his tone. I sighed, shaking my head and turning away.

As he walks away, I see my moms car, which makes me so happy because my feet are killing me. I skipped over to her car and got in quickly.

The cool air from the AC hit me instantly, and I sighed in relief, sinking into the seat. "Hey, Mom," I said, dropping my bag onto the floor. She glanced over, smiling warmly at me.

"Long day?" she asked as she shifted the car into gear.

"You have no idea," I replied, kicking off my shoes and rubbing my aching feet. "I just want to go home and sleep for like... three days."

She chuckled softly, merging onto the road. "Aren't you still going to the party with Serena."

groaned, leaning my head back against the seat. "Oh right, the party. I completely forgot about that."
