Jennie stood in the doorway, observing Lisa's fragile form. The young woman's eyes seemed to hold a thousand secrets, her gaze a mixture of desperation and resignation.
As a new jailor, Jennie had reviewed Lisa's file. Three years into a five-year sentence for a non-violent crime. No disciplinary actions, no known affiliations with gangs. Just a quiet, unassuming prisoner.
But something about Lisa's file bothered Jennie. The girl's isolation, her lack of visitors, the sparse communication with the outside world.
"Lisa, I'm Jennie. I'll be overseeing your block," Jenny announced, her voice soft.
Lisa barely acknowledged her, her gaze fixed on the floor.
Jennie tried to engage her, but Lisa remained silent.
Undeterred, Jennie decided to seek information from other prisoners. She spotted a young man, Bambam, sitting in the common area.
"Bambam, I hear you're leaving tomorrow?" Jenny asked.
Bambam nodded, his eyes brightening.
"Yeah, finally going home."Jenny leaned in.
"I'm trying to reach Lisa, but she won't talk to me. Do you know her?"
Bambam's expression turned somber.
"Yeah, Lisa's...different. She only talks to me, and not much."
Jennie's curiosity piqued.
"What do you mean?"
Bambam hesitated.
"Lisa's been through a lot. Kai's gang bullies her. She's scared."
Jennie's jaw clenched.
"I'll take care of Kai. But I need to understand Lisa. What's her story?"
Bambam glanced around cautiously.
"I don't know much. Lisa doesn't talk about herself. But...she's got a deep pain, Jennie. Something's eating her up inside."Jennie's determination grew.
"I'll help her, Bambam. Thanks for telling me."
As Jenny returned to her post, she noticed Lisa watching her from across the room. Their eyes met, and for a fleeting moment, Jennie saw a glimmer of hope.
But Lisa quickly looked away, shutting herself off once more.
