______________________________________________Raven's POV
The snarls echoed in the alleyway, growing louder with each passing second.
My lungs burned, legs pumping as fast as they could carry me, but the infected were relentless, their unnatural speed defying the logic.
I saw the narrow passage up ahead, barely wide enough for us to squeeze through.
"There!" I shouted to Elaine, pointing toward it.
She glanced at me, her face pale with fear, but she didn’t hesitate.
We change off the main path, forcing our way through the cramped space between two buildings.
The infected slammed into the walls behind us, too large to fit through but for now, at least.
Panting, I pressed my back against the brick wall, adrenaline still rushing through me.
Elaine collapsed beside me, gasping for breath.
“They… almost got us.” she whispered, eyes wide with disbelief, her voice trembled.
I nodded, too winded to speak.
The sound of infected claws scraping against the walls filled the narrow space as they tried to reach us.
But they couldn't.
Looking closely at them.
'Damn they are so fucking ugly-'
We had a brief moment of rest.
"We can’t stay here." I finally said, my voice low.
Elaine nodded, wiping sweat from her forehead. "Your apartment… was still safe?"
I glanced up at the rooftops.
"We’re close, just a few streets away. We need to keep moving."
We moved out from the passageway, keeping low, scanning for any signs of movement.
The streets were eerily quiet now, save for the distant wail of sirens and the occasional scream.
The city was falling apart, faster than I ever could have imagined.
We made it to my apartment building without further incident, but the door to the lobby was slightly open, the glass shattered.
My stomach tightened.
Something wasn’t right.
"Stay close." I whispered to Elaine, gripping the broken bottle in my hand as we crept inside.
The lobby was empty, but the air felt heavy, thick with tension.
A low moan echoed from the hallway ahead.
I froze, pulling Elaine behind me.
There, at the end of the hallway, one of them was hunched over, feasting on what used to be a person.
Blood smeared the walls, and I had to force down the urge to retch.
I tightened my grip on the bottle.
"We can sneak past." I whispered, my voice barely audible. "Just stay behind me."
We moved slowly, carefully, each step agonizingly deliberate.
The infected was too distracted with its meal to notice us, but the smell of blood lingered, making it harder to focus.
We were almost past when Elaine tripped over a broken chair, the noise echoing through the hallway.
'Damn! Elaine, you are so clumsy!'
The infected snapped its head up, blood dripping from its mouth.
'I have 2 choice that is to leave her or take her with me.'
Its empty eyes locked on us, and it let out a low growl, standing to its full height.
'I choose the last, it's not the time yet.'
"Run!" I yelled, yanking Elaine up and sprinting down the hall.
The infected lunged after us, its heavy footsteps pounding the floor.
We raced up the stairs, the infected gaining ground with terrifying speed.
My heart was hammering in my chest, but I knew the layout of the building.
I knew the shortcuts.
"Third floor!" I shouted as we reached the landing.
I quickly open the door to my apartment and shoved Elaine inside, slamming it shut behind us.
I locked the door and backed away, breathing hard.
The infected pounded against the door, but the metal frame held it just for now.
Elaine collapsed onto the couch, her face pale and hands shaking. "What now?"
I glanced around my apartment.
It was small, but it had supplies like food, water, weapons I’d stashed for emergencies.
I pulled out a knife from the kitchen drawer and handed it to her.
"Here, so you can protect yourself." I said.
'I will give you this so you must protect me.'
The pounding on the door continued, but I knew it wouldn’t last forever.
We were safe for the moment, but this was just the beginning.
And deep down, I knew I couldn’t trust anyone, not even Elaine.
'So don't resent me much if I ever betrayed you.'
