The next few days were filled with whispers about Calix. Everywhere Lyra went, she could hear fragments of conversation about the mysterious new boy. Girls giggled in the halls, speculating about where he had come from and why he seemed so distant. Boys eyed him warily, unsure if they should try to befriend him or avoid him altogether.

Lyra did her best to ignore the buzz. It wasn’t any of her business, and she had no intention of getting involved. But that was easier said than done.

Every time she saw Calix, she felt that same strange pull—a gravitational force that seemed to draw her toward him whether she wanted it or not. It wasn’t just his looks, though there was no denying that he was striking. It was something deeper, something unexplainable, like an invisible thread tying their fates together.

In class, he always sat quietly, barely speaking unless he had to. He didn’t seem interested in making friends, and yet, he wasn’t completely cold either. There was something guarded about him, as if he was keeping a secret.

Lyra knew a thing or two about secrets.

On a Thursday afternoon, just after the last bell had rung, Lyra was heading out of the school building when she noticed him again. Calix was standing by the edge of the parking lot, staring out at the horizon. His posture was tense, his eyes distant.

Before she could stop herself, she found her feet moving toward him.

“Hey,” she called softly.

Calix turned his head slightly, his eyes narrowing when he saw her. “You shouldn’t be here.”

Lyra blinked, taken aback by the sharpness in his voice. “I was just—”

“You need to stay away from me,” he interrupted, his voice low and dangerous.

Lyra frowned. “What? Why?”

Calix stepped closer, and she could feel the heat radiating from him. His eyes, now so dark they looked like endless pools of night, locked onto hers. “Because I’m not who you think I am. And if you’re smart, you’ll keep your distance.”

Her breath hitched. There was something undeniably powerful about him, something that made her both terrified and drawn to him at the same time.

“You don’t even know me,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Calix’s expression softened for just a moment, but then the hardness returned. “I know enough. Trust me, it’s safer for both of us if we don’t get involved.”

And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving Lyra standing there with her heart pounding and her mind racing.
