"dude!" piper yelled at her friends, "you can't pour oil down the sink, you idiot!" she rushes over to austen, quickly turning on the cold tap.

the four friends were doing apology dishes in piper's large kitchen to make up for the fact oscar and austen broke her vase playing twister. austen was pre-rinsing the dishes, piper was washing, nalani was drying and oscar was putting them away.

"what?" he raises his arms in innocence, "why can't you pour oil down a sink? where else does it go?"

nalani giggles, handing a plate to oscar for him to put away in the cupboard.

"in a bottle and then in the bin." piper continued to ridicule the boy, "my mom's gonna kill me."

"it's her fault we are cleaning your dishes in the first place." oscar groaned loudly.

"yeah, because you broke her vase playing twister!"

"i didn't mean to!"

"whatever!" nalani interrupts the bickering, "we're done now, let's just go before the hurricane gets here. i don't wanna be stuck in piper's house all day, no offense."

"none taken, i'm bored."

the four teens rush out of the big, white house onto the long decking that led to the marsh. their sneakers slammed down on the wood as they reached the end, slipping them off and rolling up their pants.

they all lined their shoes up, getting out their paddleboards from the box and hopping down into the water. they paddled along for a while in silence, occasionally pointing out the dark clouds drawing towards them.

they eventually drew close to austen's neighbouring home, the waves underneath them only getting stronger. rain hit hardly on their backs, soaking their clothes and hair.

"we should go in." piper worried, "the storm's getting bad and my mom's probably getting worried."

"don't be such a baby." oscar teased.

austen shook his head, paddling himself towards the decking. "no, we should go before we die or something."

piper follows him as he pulls himself up to the deck, then sticking his hand out to help piper. she pulls up, landing on the wood.

"you guys are so boring." nalani groans, repositioning herself on her board.

"have fun dying!"

oscar scoffs, shaking his head as they run down the decking. "i would never die to a hurricane called agatha. just bad for the reputation."

"you can't seriously care about the name of the hurricane your gonna die in."

he laughs, "i really do."

they continue to banter while paddling down the marsh, the waves getting heavier and the winds pushing them further upstream, into the harsher waters. nalani's stomach starts to feel funny as the sirens begin to whir above their head.

"maybe we should go back, osc." she looked over at him with fear in her eyes, "i'm serious, i don't wanna die."

"we aren't gonna die!" oscar shouts over the loud sound of the wind before a recycling bin flies infront of him, "okay, maybe we should go."

nalani walked into her house, quietly trying to close the door behind her. she heard the incoherent chatter of her family, who were probably doing something without her, per usual. she took off her shoes, placing them neatly on the rack and began to walk towards the kitchen. not to her surprise, her big brother rafe was sat on the island drinking.
