Chapter One

Nightmares

Present day

Layla looks over the edge of the roof of the building she stands on. She crouches down and watches as the group of men below have a meeting. All the men are in fancy suits and have microphones. There is a large crowd watching as one of the men talk. Layla pulls her hood and mask up and turns around. She grabs her sniper and loads it. The metal clicking in place. She sits down and fiddles with the scope. She sets up the sniper so it's pointed at the main man's head. Layla lays down on her stomach. She looks through the scope and aims it perfectly. She looks around before focusing back on the shot. She takes a deep breathe and pulls the trigger. The bullet shoots across the air quietly and hits the man. He falls down and everyone gasps. They stand up and look around. Layla looks over the edge with her head rested on her hands and a smirk on her face.

"Come on, Layla, we gotta move!" Sam says over comms. She chuckles while watching the peoples faces, not moving an inch. "Layla."

"Jeez. I'm coming, Cap," she rolls her eyes and stands up. "I just like to watch the looks on their faces." She picks up her sniper and hides it somewhere.

"Bucky is going to kill you if you put yourself in more danger," Sam warns. She scoffs.

"I'll be there in a sec-" She's cut off when she turns around and sees a group of men in tactical gear standing in front of her. "Okay, plans changed. Maybe..." Layla counts the men. "10 minutes tops." She unsheathes her katanas and walks over to the men. "Guys, your going to make me late." She complains. "Do you really wanna do this?"

The men run over to her. She rolls her eyes. One of the men jump at her trying to knock the swords out of her hands. She ducks and whips around. Layla swipes her sword and cuts the man on the neck causing him to fall down. Another one lungs at her but she swipes their feet and stabs them. Two of them lung at her and knocks the katana out of her right hand. She gasps sarcastically and puts a hand on her heart. The men stop and look at her confused. Layla uses this as an advantage and swipes the feet. They get up again and she throws one to the side. The other lungs and cuts her shoulder with a knife. She grunts in pain and slices their leg and then their neck. The man falls to the ground and she sighs. She grabs her other katana off the ground and stands back up. She hears footsteps behind her and waits. The man she threw to the ground tries to cut her neck with a dagger but before he can get to her, Layla spins the sword in her right hand and stabs behind her into his heart. He gasps and falls to the ground with the sword still in his chest. She steps on his chest and rips the sword out of his heart. She sheathes her swords again and takes a deep breathe before walking forward.

"Alright, Sam. I'm going to need a ride," Layla says. She hears Sam's wings and looks up. She watches as he flies through the sky in red, white, and blue. She runs to the edge of the building before jumping off. She falls a few feet before feeling arms wrap around her lifting her higher. She looks over and sees Sam. "Thanks, man."

"Of course," he replies, "Now we need to get you home before Bucky kills me." She chuckles.

Sam drops her onto the ground in front of a building. Layla brushes some dust off her leather pants before pulling her mask and hood down, revealing her face. She walks into the building and puts her swords on the table. Sam follows taking his goggles off. She looks around the building. It's pretty empty. She keeps walking with Sam.

"You seriously need to stop doing that shit, Layla," Sam states, "We could've gotten caught."

"But we didn't," Layla shot back, pointing at him. He rolls his eyes and chuckles.

"You're a horrible partner. You know that, right?"

"Ouch," she replies with her hand on her heart. He laughs as they walked into the conference room. Bucky sat on a chair spinning a pencil in his right hand. He heard the walk in and shot out of his chair.
