As I approach the bridge, the sturdy stones rise before me, worn smooth by the passage of countless feet. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and moss, a reminder of the nearby river that swells beneath it. The bridge arches gracefully, and its sturdy design is a testament to the skill of the stonemasons who built it. Each block seems to tell a story, weathered by time and marked by the hand of artisans long since passed.
I climb the shallow incline, feeling reverence wash over me as I tread upon the cobblestones, polished by years of use.
The faint sound of rushing water plays a tranquil melody beneath, mingling with the distant noise of the jumping fish further down the bank. A wooden railing, splintered in places, runs alongside the bridge, and I grasp it, feeling a sense of safety as I gaze down at the swirling eddies below.
Upon reaching the center, I pause to take in the view – the fields stretching out on either side, their green and gold hues shimmering in the sunlight, the city nestled just beyond the rise, smoke curling from chimneys like whispered secrets. I can see the night marketplace bustling with life, and hear the distant clang of the blacksmith's hammer as it echoes through the city.
The caste sat upon curling mountains, where Viper lay asleep with Kay, Seek, and Colin both quietly stood post, and Micheal watched the stars warily, waiting for his call back to the celestial realm.
Closing my eyes I focused on what I came down here for. Stepping just a little to the left so I could see her face, Indigo hair carefully tied back, electric blue eyes watching the water below lazily. Fine skin glowing in the moonlight. Everything about her beauty was tied into a near bow with the silk black & silver robes she wore, a mourning chain carefully tied onto her waist.
Even as a beauty of the moon, I could smell the reek of alcohol on her, cupping my mouth it took me a minute to smell the burning candle she had beside her. Not to mention the horror that she had in her hand.
"Blake!" I yelled out as soon as I saw the tiny white capsule in her hand, tossing myself toward her, reaching a hand around her, and tugging the pill from her hand. Grateful for the water below, the pill plummeting into the water with a sploosh noise.
She had a look of pure terror on her face, her jaw trembling while she tried to work out the words to say, "Why did you do it? This is my last chance," She choked, cupping her face with one hand and running her hand back into her hair.
"Why? Blake that pill will kill you! You know better than that, Darling!" I cupped her face, "The twins would kill me if they knew that you died and I could have stopped you."
"You can't stop me, I'll die somehow tonight. Whether it be at the hands of those monsters or my own boyfriend's. This was my last chance to die in a non-painful way."
"You're not dying tonight, Blake." I coaxed her into my arms, as I had done many times before at dragon slayer meetings, whenever she'd wake up from night terrors and we all would cuddle around Viper.
Bryan was always the first to react when he heard Blake cry since he was the lightest sleeper of us all, yet I was often the one who calmed her down.
Blake's quiet voice spoke up, cracked and so broken it ripped my heart open at the sound of it, "You hate me though, don't you Allumos?"
"No– I overreacted when we saw each other again, I know that and I'm sorry, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to stop you from suicide!" I cried, tightening my grip around her, "Lucas used his lying trick– he told me you weren't lying about how you never hurt him. I apologize Blake."
Though I struggled to apologize, because I still partially believed it, I knew damn well it was wrong. I knew it in my chest I was wrong. And this woman was about to take Eruinhin capsules.
Everything was silent for a long time, her hand tightened on my cloak. Words caught in my throat as I attempted not to cry. Tucking my face into her hair I closed my eyes and reminded myself quietly that she was far younger than me. I truly was in my 200s, she was only mid to late 20s.
She was a child compared to myself.
My child, just as all the other dragon slayers.
And I had accused her of harming the one man she loved unconditionally. That would be like if someone accused me of harming Kit or Marshie when all I had done was shove them out of the way of a bullet, leaving them with bruises but with a bullet hole in my side.
Gently I rubbed her back, a quiet attempt to soothe her sobbing. "Blake?"
She sniffled, shaking her head slowly, "What?"
Gentle cupping the stubs of what used to be her wings, I pressed my face into her hair again. "You said if you didn't take the pills you would die a painful death at the hands of either monsters or Lucas. Tell me Blake, who are the monsters?"
