“Close your mouth, Aron, you’ll catch a fly.” Mom tells Aron as he and my other siblings stare slack-jawed at me.
“Be honest,” I say nervously. “I’m a freak aren’t I.”
“No.” Aron says quickly. “You look good. Um, it’s just, you know. It’s different. And different is good. But it’s a little freaky that my little sister is a vampire.” He says making me frown. But I guess I did ask for honesty.
“You’re a real idiot Aron.” Vivian sighs shoving past him. “Don’t worry about the dunce's opinion. You look lovely.” She beams hugging me tightly.
As I awkwardly smile and hug Vivian back one question pops into my mind. How the heck is she handling this better than me? I’ve been stuck in this state of shock since yesterday. Hers only lasted a minute. She acts like I changed outfits instead of becoming an entirely new person overnight. At least she’s not afraid of me like I feared. Luckily none of them seem to be.
“Sorry.” Aron says scratching that thick head of his. “But when Mom said she had a surprise, I thought she meant dessert, money, or a new car. Not this.” He says gesturing at me as I stick my tongue out at him.
“In what universe is Mom and Dad going to get you a car?” I ask him.
“The awesome one.” He responds with a smirk.
“Now is that the same universe where you are a king or is it the one where you’re the leader of the Alpha Team Wolf Squad?”
Viv and Neil’s faces turn red with laughter and Aron’s even redder from embarrassment. “Bite me.” He mumbles.
“I just might,” I say with a playful, fangy smile.
“We'll have none of that.” Mom warns. “I don’t want you two tearing up the house like last time.” She says pointing towards the large blue vase covered in cracks and crazy glue—the result of a previous tussle.
“Well settle it outside later.” I whisper. But Aron shakes his head.
“Probably not a good idea.” He whispers back. “Damn. I guess we can’t play biters and guardians either.”
“Probably for the best.” I agree trying to mask my disappointment. “You really do suck at playing a vampire.” I chuckle.
“We’ll see. Maybe after I get used to being this first, we can have fun after.”
Aron nods. “Sounds good to me.”
Thank goodness, looks like I was worried over nothing. I was far too quick to expect my family to demonize me the second they saw the real me. They’ve tolerated me this long anyway, so why change now? It's not as if I came back as some hulking, snarling, grotesque beast. Now I have something new to agonize over. Things are going to change. I knew that even before I discovered all of this. Hell, things have already begun to morph. But I hope I like whatever becomes the new normal for us.
“This is so cool. You do feel as cold as ice.” Neil says excitedly poking my arm. “Can you turn into a bat or do you have wings? Do you have magic? Are you going to live forever? Can you teleport? Can you use mind control? Can I cut your arm to see how fast it heals?”
“What? No. I don’t know. I hope not. Go away, Neil.” I say pushing him away as he giggles and squirms.
“Alright, that’s enough.” Mom tells Neil. “Goodness, it's like you ate sugar for breakfast.”
