"I lifted the hem of his shirt over his
head and let my hands trail across
his skin. My fingertips drift down
his back, and he tensed when I stroked
his tattoo. I wanted him. I craved him"I stand in the small entry room tapping my French nails on the front desk. The sound of Aunt Silvia's keyboard along with my nails tapping echo in the room forming a repetitive melody.
"Click tap click tap click", I almost fall asleep to the monotone.
With her eyes still fixed to the screen Silvia finally opens her mouth to speak.
"So your parents finally said yes huh?"
I smile to myself a sense of pride washing over me, "Yes I finally convinced them and it was thanks to you!"
"Hmmm" Silvia murmurs acting like the mature 50 year old woman she was.
Her eyes rise up to meet mine, "But remember Zoe living alone isn't easy and I promised your mom I'd take good care of you."
I roll my eyes behind my glasses.
" You have many responsibilities and distractions awaiting you. Birminton High isn't an easy place..."
She's rephrasing what I heard back home from my parents maybe about a thousand times.
I nod lazily even though I'm pretty sure she didn't even see me. She was still busy tapping away on her laptop, rolling her mouse through some names and documents. I was so impatient to finally have my own apartment room, that ten minutes felt like an hour. If Silvia hadn't been my mom's sister , there was no way in hell I would be standing here right now.
At first my parents were strictly against the idea of me living alone.
I had to waste my first semester doing house chores, scoring high grades, and skipping all the fun college frat parties, just to show my parents how responsible I could be.
It was already my second semester here in Birminton College and since it was pretty far away from where I lived, my parents FINALLY decided it was time for me to get my own dorm room. Lucky enough for mom, her widowed sister Silvia was a landlady in one of the inns near campus and was kind enough to offer me a room assuring mom that I was going to be safe.
It wasn't a five star hotel or a luxurious building, but more of an antique doll house with lots of outgrown trees and vines. The apartment rooms seemed cheap and partially made from oak wood, and from what I've heard the rooms were empty, void of any college students. So I didn't have to worry about any distractions, house parties, drunk boys, smells of socks, or creaking beds next door.
"Ah found your name!" Silvia shouts waking me up from my haze.
"Room 102" she smiles turning around to grab a pair of keys from some wooden hangers.
Room 102! My own apartment, my own life, my own baby! I smile brightly as she drops the keys into my hands and I clutch them tightly as if I just won the lottery. Cheers to no curfews! Cheers to no parents bossing me around and telling me what to do or where to go! This is the beginning of my beautiful perfect college year!
"Come on! Follow me!" Silvia motions for me to follow her.
I snap out of my mini-mind party and try to sound as calm as possible "Okay".
We walk through an empty hallway with apartment doors on both sides and then up a set of stairs into another similar hallway. The sound of wood creaks beneath our feet as I catch up with Silvia like a little puppy. I take my time observing the white doors one by one and the room numbers painted in black on each. The building consisted of only two floors but all the rooms were full. I was lucky enough to reserve the last one.
"Here you go! That's your room Zoe".
Silvia stops in front of a white door labelled 102 and I smile at it like an idiot.
"Thank you for everything" I say politely.
"Don't mention it sweetheart!" she laughs adjusting her glasses on her crooked nose. "Whatever you need whatever bothers you don't be shy, just to talk to me"
"I'll keep that in mind" I nod back.
" If you ever need me my room is the one in the entryway just behind the desk".
She then smiles a motherly smile and pats my head walking away.

My apartment is perfect and my luggage has already been carried to my room.
I look around the small space bathed in sunlight from the window, breathing in the air of fresh pine wood and paint. The room fit two single beds on either side of the wall, and had a dusty desk with drawers and a mirror to the other. The kitchen consisted of a mini bar, a microwave, a small oven, and a fridge. Everything seemed mini and antique in this room, but I loved it. A small balcony opened up to some pine trees and the flower garden below. You could hear the water sprinkles underneath and the chirping of some birds in the distance.
I kneel onto the wooden floor and begin to unpack. I fold a pair of pajamas, sets of underwear, bras, shirts and jeans into the oak closet besides my bed. I then line-up my books and romance novels neatly into the desk drawers and make sure to stick some pictures and posters onto the plain white wall. Pictures of me and my family back in Texas, a picture of my dateless senior prom, a picture of the first time I got drunk, a picture of me and my best friend Trish smiling with braces back in tenth grade, and a picture of my high school crush Mike Bailey who now attends Birminton as well.
Mike, Trish, and I, have been close friends since high school but Mike had a girlfriend back then and we wouldn't see him or hangout with him much. Coincidentally now the three of us are attending the same college, are closer than ever, and Mike's SINGLE.
He and his girlfriend broke up right before his first year at Birminton. My first thought was that she had applied to another college overseas, and I was right. He was devastated, but me and Trish tried our best to cheer him up and keep him distracted.
I blush thinking about the two of us sitting together in this very small room alone. Of course his picture wouldn't be there...that would be freaky.
I bounce onto bed and grab my phone feeling exhausted already. Two text messages.
One was from mom asking me if everything was okay, and one was from Trish asking me about my apartment and that she was swinging by soon. I begin to type back and send Trish my message before drifting off into a peaceful sleep.
Zo^^: "Trish this is the life!"
